Choosing a major or career path is rarely straightforward. For many students, it takes an unexpected experience — and the courage to explore something new — to uncover an interest that truly clicks. For GodGreatness Atere, a senior at the University of Southern Maine, embracing this spirit of exploration led her to discover a new academic path in her third year at USM.
Already declared as an Accounting major by her Junior year, the last thing Atere expected to get out of an elective was a second major in Operations and Supply Chain Management (OCSM). She found that the course, focused on Production and Operations Management, provided insight into the bigger picture of running a business beyond just the numbers.
“I found myself genuinely interested in how businesses run,” said Atere. “The course opened my eyes and helped me see beyond the financials.”
Her double major in OSCM has provided Atere with practical, hands-on skills. Challenged to think like a real-world decision maker, she is developing expertise in operations planning, data analysis, and team collaboration. As she looks to the future, Atere is excited to pursue supply chain roles after graduating this spring.
This emphasis on real-world learning will be on full display for high school students, early college students, and undeclared majors at USM during an upcoming Career Exploration Event hosted by OSCM. On November 13, students will get the chance to learn more about USM’s new online BSBA in Operations & Supply Chain Management, explore the variety of career opportunities the major can lead to, and meet IDEXX professionals working in logistics, manufacturing and procurement.
“Don’t stress if you don’t have it all figured out yet,” Atere said. “I found OSCM because I gave myself room to explore. Just start, learn as you go, and let your interest guide you.”
Atere’s story is a reminder to embrace an open mind and explore the opportunities that might lead us on unexpected paths.
