Bangor Savings Bank Invests in Maine’s Future with $75,000 Gift to the USM Foundation

The University of Southern Maine Foundation announced that it has received a $75,000 “founding sponsor” gift from Bangor Savings Bank, a leading community bank in Northern New England, with business locations in Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. The contribution will support the completion of the McGoldrick Center for Career & Student Success, soon to open on the University of Southern Maine (USM) Portland Campus.

The McGoldrick Center Founding Sponsors program offers employer partners like Bangor Savings recognition opportunities in a central, highly visible location on the USM Portland campus. The Bangor Savings Bank gift will sponsor a large interview room in the Career & Employment Hub, where students can connect with prospective employers for interviews or talk with their career counselors.

The McGoldrick Center is named for Maine philanthropists, Carolyn and Dick McGoldrick, who have been integral in the establishment of USM’s innovative Promise Scholarship Program. The program is committed to ensuring that limited-income, first-generation Maine students, who possess leadership qualities and demonstrate a deep commitment to service, are on a path to successfully complete their college degree with minimal debt and be in a position to join Maine’s workforce.

“The University of Southern Maine’s McGoldrick Center for Career & Student Success is a model for sustainable building and creates collaboration spaces for students and employers,” said Bob Montgomery-Rice, President and CEO of Bangor Savings Bank. “Bangor Savings Bank is proud to help further the vision of Dick and Carolyn McGoldrick in aiding all students by offering a place where they can build connections that enable a successful transition to college and beyond.”

Bangor Savings Bank is a valued partner of the University and has made generous contributions to USM’s Promise Scholarship Program and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, located on USM’s Portland campus.

“Bangor Savings Bank’s commitment to the University and our students is deeply appreciated, said Ainsley Wallace, President and CEO of the USM Foundation.” We are thrilled to welcome them as a Founding Sponsor of the new McGoldrick Center––a space specifically designed to connect our students with premier employer partners like Bangor Savings Bank. Their generous gift is an investment that will benefit our students and the economic development of Maine communities.”

The McGoldrick Center will serve as the Portland campus crossroads, where students, faculty, alumni, and employers can connect and collaborate. The Center’s second floor will be home to USM’s expanded Career & Employment Hub, where the employer community intersects with students in the academic community. The third floor of the Center is dedicated to cultivating student leadership opportunities and connections with spaces set aside for USM’s Student Government Association, Diversity Center, student organizations, and more.

With dining facilities, meeting and conference rooms, student activity rooms, and the expanded Career Hub, the Center is among the most environmentally sustainable buildings on USM’s transforming Portland campus. It is a three-story, 42,000 square-foot space that is sustainably designed to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Silver certification. It will overlook the new campus quad, named the “Bean Green,” and sits adjacent to Portland Commons, the first residence hall on USM’s Portland campus.
