The University of Southern Maine (USM) Foundation has announced a generous $750,000 gift from the Blossom Charitable Fund to name the Arts Lab in the Crewe Center for the Arts on USM’s Portland campus. The space will be known as the Blossom Arts Lab.
The gift marks the second major philanthropic announcement connected to the USM Foundation’s newly launched Crescendo Campaign, the final fundraising phase for the Crewe Center for the Arts. Having already inspired more than $25 million in support, the campaign’s final $5 million Crescendo phase focuses on naming several of the Center’s iconic spaces while building momentum around the Crewe’s emergence as a leading cultural hub for Maine and Northern New England.
Designed as a dynamic, flexible space for creativity and experimentation, the Lab will foster collaboration across disciplines while serving as a hub for student learning, performance, and community engagement. The space reflects the Crewe Center’s broader mission to connect emerging artists with professional opportunities and audiences beyond campus.
“This gift represents another powerful moment in the growing crescendo around the Crewe Center,” said USM President Jacqueline Edmondson. “The Blossom Fund investment helps transform the Arts Lab into a place where students can experiment boldly, collaborate deeply, and connect directly with Maine’s creative community.”
The Arts Lab will also play an important role in strengthening ties between USM and Maine’s professional arts organizations. This summer, for example, the Portland Theater Festival will stage a production in the Arts Lab, offering students and audiences alike the chance to experience professional theater in an intimate and innovative setting. USM’s partnership with the Festival and its director, Dave Register, has already created meaningful opportunities for USM students, including internships, professional collaborations, and exposure to working artists in the field.
As the Crescendo Campaign continues, the USM Foundation expects additional major announcements tied to the naming and activation of key spaces within the Crewe Center. Together, those investments are helping position the Center not simply as a new building, but as a defining force in Maine’s cultural future.
“This is the kind of investment that strengthens both our campus and our community,” Edmondson said. “It connects students to real-world experience, honors the importance of the arts, and reinforces USM’s role as a cultural anchor in Maine.”
