Military Friendly® recognizes USM student veteran, athlete

Trevor Engling, a four-year member of the Huskies’ wrestling team, was recently named the first Student Veteran Athlete of the Year by Military Friendly®.

The award is presented to “an outstanding student veteran athlete who exemplifies the finest qualities of our nation’s military.” As a former Navy submariner and a four-time William B. Wise Scholar Athlete, Engling fits the bill.

“Once I transferred to USM I not only found my academic groove but also gained some fantastic support systems within the athletic and veterans services departments.” —Trevor Engling

Selection for this national award is based on “athletic ability and exemplary character, including leadership, sportsmanship, perseverance, mental toughness and participation in community and campus activities.” After completing his bachelor’s degree in secondary education in 2021, Trevor stayed at the University of Southern Maine to pursue a master’s in Educational Leadership. He graduates this spring.

In addition to his wrestling accomplishments at the University, Engling maintains high academic standards and supported fellow student veterans. As graduate assistant for Veterans Services, he coordinated this year’s new student veteran orientation. Through his passion for improving access to financial support, he has helped countless student veterans find and apply for scholarships.
