Mitchell selected as Director of Admissions following national search

Britney Mitchell, who has been working with faculty, staff and students at the University of Southern Maine for nine years, has been named the University’s new Director of Admissions.

Mitchell takes over the role after serving as the Senior Associate Director of Transfer Affairs. In that job, Mitchell built relationships with faculty and administrators to better prepare the University for an influx of transfer students from Maine’s Community Colleges, the result of the State’s Free Community College scholarship.

This fall, the University is seeing a 10% growth in incoming transfer students to its campuses, located in Portland, Gorham, and Lewiston, as well as Online.

“I have seen the University of Southern Maine change, adapt, and meet the needs of its students in the best ways possible and am excited to be stepping into a role that can have such a transformative impact in a student’s life.” Mitchell said.

The Massachusetts native started at USM as an Admissions Counselor in 2015, after completing her master’s degree in Higher Education Administration from Bay Path University. She continued her career as Associate Director for Online Students working with Online Graduate students.

In her new role, Mitchell will build upon the work and relationships created by outgoing Director Rachel Morales, who will be preparing to retire from the University after two decades in Admissions. Under her guidance, the USM Admissions team withstood a global pandemic while leading the University through new landscapes and initiatives.

“Britney will build upon the amazing work Rachel has done as the University thrived, welcoming more out-of-state students year after year with continually diversifying classes,” said Meaghan Arena, the Vice President for Enrollment Management, Marketing, and Student Retention. “We are excited for the direction she will lead our Admissions team in.”
