The College of Education is tackling Maine’s critical teacher shortage by preparing highly qualified educators for full professional certification in areas such as general education, special education, art education, music education, and teaching English as a second language. Over the past 5 years, nearly 500 students have completed our undergraduate and graduate teacher preparation programs.
In 2026, we recommended 101 program completers for professional teacher certification, yielding outstanding employment outcomes. Of the completers who responded to a recent survey:
- 100% secured relevant employment.
- 88.2% currently teach in Maine schools.
- 35% were hired directly by the school districts where they completed early field experiences or internships.
Our program completers clearly enter the workforce with highly valued skills and qualifications.
Our students also support Maine’s schools long before graduation. Nearly 10% of our current teacher education students are full-time teachers of record with conditional certifications and 5% are full-time educational technicians. In our special education degree programs, 85% of undergraduates and 100% of graduate students are actively employed in schools.
