David Shaw ’76G ’15H is a widely respected leader in the global science and social impact communities, building more than a dozen technology companies and devoting himself to extensive public service experience. Shaw is dedicated to numerous causes, and as a USM graduate, a proud Mainer, and accomplished scuba diver, he has a deep passion for protecting the ocean.

Shaw’s environmental conservation work is extensive and has included chair of the Sargasso Sea Alliance, trustee of the National Park Foundation, Patron at the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, founder of Second Century Stewardship, and co-chair of the Aspen Institute High Seas Initiative. He was named Wave Maker at the 2016 Blue Ocean Film Festival and “SeaKeeper of the Year” by the International SeaKeeper Society in 2013. He is a member of the Ocean Elders, an independent group of global leaders who have joined together to serve as a catalyst in the conservation and protection of the ocean and its wildlife.

In addition to the talk and a Q&A session, the 2022-23 Shaw Innovation Fellows will each introduce themselves and share updates on their projects. The Shaw Innovation Fellowship Program was established in 2021 through a $500,000 gift by David Shaw and the Shaw family to support innovation, entrepreneurship, and exploration for participating graduate students.

This lecture is part of the 25th anniversary of the Muskie School of Public Service this academic year, following a November 2022 event honoring the 50th anniversary of the Clean Water Act. Senator Edmund Muskie was one of the leading voices of American environmentalism, and the Clean Water Act is his signature legislation. We are honored to invite David Shaw to speak in this great tradition and hope you will join us for this important discussion from an expert with uncommon insights and perspective.
