USM Renews Partnership with The Arctic University of Norway, Expanding Student Exchange and Applied Research Collaboration

USM President Edmondson and Dag Rune Olsen, rector of The Arctic University of Norway shake hands after signing renewed collaboration agreement.

On Feb. 26, The University of Southern Maine and The Arctic University of Norway renewed and expanded a long-running institutional collaboration agreement, reaffirming a transatlantic partnership rooted in student exchange, faculty collaboration, and applied research, shaped by a shared North Atlantic perspective. It builds on nearly a decade of academic engagement designed to connect USM students with international learning and research opportunities alongside peers in northern Norway.

“Our partnership with UiT demonstrates the power of interdisciplinary learning on an international stage,” said Jacqueline Edmondson, president of USM. “Students from across academic fields have engaged directly with complex North Atlantic issues alongside their peers in Norway, presenting research, sharing perspectives and building relationships that extend well beyond the classroom.”

Since 2018, the two institutions have cultivated reciprocal student and faculty engagement, supported joint graduate research cohorts and advanced collaborative academic initiatives. Through programs like  the Maine North Atlantic Institute, scholars from Maine and northern Norway have examined regional challenges involving the blue economy, policy, and culture, connecting classroom learning with questions shared across both regions.

The Arctic University of Norway, headquartered in Tromsø and widely recognized for research in Arctic science, marine systems, and interdisciplinary innovation, has developed the partnership with USM through sustained academic exchange and shared inquiry.

The renewed agreement continues that academic foundation while strengthening pathways for applied research collaboration and scholarly exchange. Together, the institutions will explore opportunities to strengthen innovation dialogue across the Atlantic and connect knowledge creation with practical application.

“UiT is committed to advancing research excellence in close dialogue with society,” said Dag Rune Olsen, rector of The Arctic University of Norway. “Our collaboration with USM has developed through strong academic exchange and shared inquiry. By continuing to strengthen our research environments and interdisciplinary connections, we open the possibility for future initiatives that connect knowledge creation with broader innovation contexts.”
