Overview of Class
In this course, students will apply the principles of philosophical inquiry – clarifying ideas, questioning assumptions, and applying new insights to practice – as we consider historical and contemporary thinking about music, music education, and teaching and learning within an ever-evolving set of beliefs and practices. The course will have a face-to-face introductory meeting and the remainder of the course will feature self-directed projects designed in collaboration with the course instructor. This course is required for students pursuing an MM in Music Education.

Overview of Class
This master clinic is designed to be a hands-on workshop on woodwind and brass performance and pedagogy. The aim of the course is to provide music educators with an opportunity to refresh their knowledge about the fundamentals of woodwind and brass teaching and performance while also delving into advanced concepts on each instrument to support students that reach higher levels of instrumental development. Artist faculty at the Osher School of Music will facilitate flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, horn, trombone/euphonium, and tuba clinic sessions. Two sessions will be offered during each day of workshop meetings with each session running for three hours. Participants should bring the instrument for the topic of study to each clinic session. Participants taking this course for graduate credit will generate and submit an electronic resource site that will serve as a portfolio of learning and as a quick reference tool that can be updated easily and used in professional practice. This course will be offered as credit and CEU options.

Overview of Class
In this course, we will explore processes and experiences in music making, teaching, and learning that shape the development of musical capacities through the domains of cognitive, social, and developmental psychology. We will examine both typical and atypical developmental trajectories and how musical development is mediated by socio-cultural influences, including formal and informal learning environments. Grappling with these ideas will improve your knowledge and understanding about the human drive to make and learn music. We will confront topics on the origins and functions of music, on development and motivation in music learning, on musical skill acquisition, and on the role of music in human life. This class will help you articulate a vision for the musical experience in learning contexts and the processes through which music influences both personal and interpersonal development. This class will meet weekly for four one-hour synchronous online sessions to engage as a community of learners and share findings from weekly investigative prompts. In addition, students will complete an independent project that investigates a topic of interest in depth. This course is required for students pursuing an MM in Music Education.
