Program highlights

  • Prepare for a wide range of careers in areas such as ESOL, language documentation, language revitalization, translation, language-related technologies.
  • Work closely with peers and receive one-on-one individualized attention from faculty through internships and funded research assistantships.

  • Build a learning foundation focused on the nature, organization, acquisition, and origins of human natural language.
  • Present research at state, regional, and national conferences — and even co-author research published in leading academic journals.

Hands-on community experience

Collaborate with faculty on service learning projects such as the annual Maine Deaf Film Festival, ESL tutoring in the community, research on child language, and developing an automated language analysis tools.

Program requirements

Prepare for a profession deeply committed to studying language as a fundamental human activity and as a changing institution. At the core of our program is a set of foundational courses on the nature of human language that sets students up for meaningful roles or the pursuit of graduate study.
