Expected career outcomes
Strong career options
A BS in Biochemistry can lead to a wide variety of professional opportunities, including further scientific training in graduate school, medical or pharmacy school, or careers at biotech companies. Our alumni are accepted into the most demanding graduate programs and enjoy successful careers in research and a variety of industrial fields.
Expert, dedicated faculty
Our Chemistry department is small, which fosters close interaction between students and our active and engaged faculty. They are committed to encouraging student growth, inquiry, and mastery of the skills needed to be part of global solutions.
Program requirements
The program provides a rigorous pre-professional education for those interested in pursuing STEM careers or graduate school. The curriculum is designed to develop your understanding of the chemistry of living organisms, the molecular mechanisms of disease, and the chemistry of evolution and its meaning for human health.
Scholarship opportunities
Scholarships offer valuable financial aid that doesn’t need to be repaid. You’ll be automatically considered for Merit Scholarships when you apply for admission by the deadline. Additional opportunities are available.
Accreditation
Our Chemistry department is accredited by the American Chemical Society, which aspires to improve people’s lives through the transforming power of chemistry.
Exciting learning spaces
You’ll gain real-world experience using analytical instrumentation in our modern Biochemistry research lab. In upper-level coursework, you’ll learn to evaluate samples, interpret data, and discover how changing experimental parameters affect the output.
Put theory into practice
Opportunities for hands-on experience abound through faculty-mentored research projects, independent study in our research labs, and internships with state-based, national, and international scientific firms such as IDEXX, Maine Health Institute of Research, Abbott, Pratt and Whitney, and Sappi, among others.
