An Introvert’s Guide to USM in Portland, Maine

by Emma Comparato

I’m a junior on the Portland campus living in a single dorm. I consider myself an introvert, but have really been making an effort this year to get out and socialize more.

When I arrived on campus this semester as a transfer student, I didn’t know anyone. I decided to put myself out there and create the connections that I wanted. And it worked! I’ve already made some amazing friends. It didn’t always feel easy, so I gave myself time to explore campus on my own, too. That really helped me recharge and relax from all the socializing. Keep reading for some of my best advice.

Take yourself on study dates

One thing I absolutely love about living in Portland is all the little spots you can study or grab a drink — or both! These are some of my favorite places to recharge.

Uncharted Tea in Portland, ME

I look forward to coming here to sit in the sun and get a matcha or bubble tea. The vibes are so nice. I feel like I can come in, sit down, and really get work done when it comes to studying. There are lots of seats to grab for a quiet place when you feel overwhelmed on campus.

Portland Public Library

This one is probably pretty obvious. It’s one of my favorite places to go when I don’t want to spend money but do want a different environment. There’s even a small art gallery here, which is always fun to look at for inspiration.

This is a favorite because you get to spend time with a room full of kittens. Students in the area also get a discounted entry price, which is great! I love it because you can also book a study spot. I haven’t done it yet, but I plan to this semester. Spending time with kitties is a great way to reduce stress and recharge your social battery, so it’s good for the soul. Highly recommend visiting!

Find peaceful places on campus

It’s important to find places to go to when life feels hectic and you need some time with yourself. It can be really hard to do things on your own in college, especially when you have roommates. I’ve been there! That’s why I found it extremely helpful and important to make time for myself.

I suggest finding one or two special places to hunker down. Whether that’s with your laptop to study, to bring a snack and watch a movie, or to doodle and read a book. Find a quiet place that feels like you. For me, it’s the second floor of McGoldrick. You can probably find me there with my headphones on, listening to music while I study.

Another favorite is the Sky Lounge in Portland Commons. Every dorm building has a type of lounge to go to when you feel like you can’t hang out in your dorm room. This is one way to find relaxation without having to travel too far. You can make any place your own, even in the chaos of campus.

Make time for friends

Even though I’m an introvert, I still find it important to spend time with the people I care about. Sometimes being a people person can be totally exhausting. However, the people you surround yourself with can be the ones who uplift you the most. Make time for those people in your life.

I think it’s so important to be brave and try to be outgoing once in a while. I wouldn’t have made some of my best friends if I didn’t push myself to say hello. It might feel awkward or weird at first, but know that it’s all worth it. I did it — and so can you!
