Gluten-Free and Dairy-Free Dining at USM: What I Eat in a Day

As a sophomore at the University of Southern Maine — and someone with multiple food intolerances — I spent much of my first year figuring out where and what I could eat.

There are some great dining options across the Gorham and Portland campuses, but planning meals can be a struggle when you have dietary restrictions. No one should ever have to skip a meal or worry about accidentally eating something that makes them sick.

To help ease some of that stress, here’s a look at what I eat on campus in a day as a student with gluten and dairy intolerances.

Breakfast

Brooks Dining Hall on the Gorham campus has an allergen-friendly room, which is really helpful. That’s where I usually start my day with a gluten-free bagel or toast. I also like to add home fries, the protein choice they have that morning, and a side of fruit.

When I start my day on the Portland campus, I typically go to the Husky Brew for a vanilla iced latte with oat milk and cinnamon, and one of the vegan and gluten-free granola bars.

Lunch

One of my favorite meals for lunch is fried rice from the wok bar in Brooks.

You can put together your own mix of vegetables, protein, and a choice of rice or noodles.

The wok bar makes it super easy to make a bowl tailored to your liking. I personally get fried rice with chicken and an egg, and I always add different vegetables to mix things up.

Snacks

When I’m looking for a small snack later in the day, I like to go back to the allergen-friendly room in Brooks. I have a few favorites, including Annie’s gluten-free bunny graham crackers or the gluten-free pretzels.

When I need a quick source of protein, I look for the jerky sticks that are sold on both campuses.

Dinner

My schedule often keeps me busy until after the dining hall closes, so the Husky Hideaway on the Gorham campus is my go-to for dinner. For a gluten-free option, I like to get a hamburger with a gluten-free bun and a side of fries. There are salad and sushi options available as well.

It took some trial and error during my first year, but I’ve found plenty of meals and snacks that work for me across both campuses. My biggest advice? Explore your options early, ask questions about ingredients, and find a few go-to meals you know you can count on.
