Block Cop City

Please join the USM Criminology Department for a presentation by Block Cop City. Block Cop City is a mass mobilization of people from Atlanta and across the country to converge on the proposed Cop City site to stop construction.

In the coming weeks, organizers defending the forest are going on tour in 50+ locations! Come on out to learn more, connect with others, and form plans to go to Atlanta and take action wherever you are. Jamie Peck, Stop Cop City Organizer and podcaster, will lead this presentation on October 3 at 5PM in Room 165 in the Science Building at the University of Southern Maine’s Portland Campus.

This event will contain a presentation on the history of the land the city is attempting to build Cop City on, a history of the movement to Stop Cop City, an outline of the movement’s next phase (Block Cop City), and a short workshop to help interested participants form affinity groups and plan next steps. There will also be a question and answer portion.

Aside from bringing people to Atlanta, we hope to spread skills & creativity related to mass direct action and participatory, democratic mass organizing, strengthening the prospects for other, local struggles.

Bio: Jamie Peck is a writer, podcaster, and organizer whose work focuses on social justice. As producer/contributor at The Majority Report with Sam Seder, she made sure the anti-capitalist left was represented on a YouTube show and podcast that reached a mass audience. She has provided longform political education on her podcasts The Antifada and Everybody Loves Communism, and organized a number of events as part of NYC DSA’s political education committee. As a member of the movement to Stop Cop City, she’s excited to inspire young activists to get involved with the next phase of this important struggle.
