Title IX and Pregnant Students

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (“Title IX”), 20 U.S.C. §1681 et seq., is a Federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex—including pregnancy and parental status—in educational programs and activities. The U.S. Department of Education has some great information online.

USM’s Deputy Title IX Coordinator often works with pregnant students and new parents to help them navigate the various processes at USM. This can include negotiating with faculty, making connections to USM Disability Services Center if there are any medical difficulties, and helping to ensure the pregnant, and newly parenting, students have the support they need to continue their education.
