The University of Southern Maine is an environment that cultivates leaders who, upon graduation, are ready to lead and are excited to remain engaged in the communities where they live and work. An important part of this culture is through encouraging students, staff, faculty, and our local community to collaborate and create an engaged community.
Service-learning and volunteerism create opportunities in and outside of the classroom by building an engaged campus through service working with local, national, and international organizations to address community-identified needs. This structured engagement, similar to internships, allows for the development of mutual relationships between the University and our community. A comprehensive amount of peer reviewed and published studies have shown an increased comprehension and understanding of “soft” and “hard” skills in employment after graduation.
