Adam Tuchinsky, PhD

Adam Tuchinsky, who received his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina, has taught at USM since 2001. Since 2010, he has served in a variety of administrative roles, as Associate Dean, Chief of Staff to the President, and the Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at USM. His field of study is the history of the United States in the nineteenth century. He teaches a variety of courses in U.S.history including Civil War and Reconstruction, the Age of Jackson, American Popular Culture, and the United States in the Age of Market Revolutions. For general education, he teaches specialized courses such as Thoreau: Nature, Society, and Self and Thoughtful Giving: Philanthropy and American Culture that have significant experiential learning elements.

His research focuses upon the intellectual and political history of the United States during the Civil War era, broadly construed. He has published articles in the Journal of American History and American Nineteenth-Century History, and the Journal of Women’s History. His first book, Horace Greeley’s New-York Tribune: Civil War-era Socialism and the Crisis of Free Labor was published by Cornell University Press in November of 2009. He is currently working on a book upon the political economy of Transcendentalism.
