Generous donors to the University of Southern Maine help open doors to opportunity by funding scholarships that ease the financial burden for our students and empower them to succeed. These scholarships are more than financial support; they reflect the values, stories, and aspirations of the individuals, families, organizations, and foundations who make them possible.
Below is a list of USM’s named scholarships, each representing a meaningful investment in the future of our students and the mission of the university. Please note that not all scholarships listed are currently awarded each year.

The Adams Family Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine in 2006 with an anonymous gift. The fund provides scholarships to undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need.
The Altrusa Club of Maine Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine (USM) by annual gifts from the Altrusa Club of Portland Maine, Inc. The fund shall be used for scholarship support.
This endowed scholarship was established in 2012 by an anonymous donor in memory of Henry C. Amoroso, Jr., who was a professor emeritus in literacy in the School of Education and Human Development. The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarships for students enrolled in graduate level literacy courses at the University of Southern Maine, with preference given to students enrolled in the Henry C. Amoroso, Jr. Summer Institute.
The Carl and Olive Armentrout Award was established at the University of Southern Maine in the year 2000 by Professor Emeritus Charles Armentrout in memory of his parents. The income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to an undergraduate full-time student who is currently majoring in Physics or another natural science.
The Tenney Sutter ’79 and Newell Augur, MD Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2004 by Dr. and Mrs. Newell A. Augur, Jr.
The fund shall be used for scholarship support of students:
- Majoring in music
- With a minimum 12 credits per semester
- Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.67
- Enrolled in applied music and appropriate ensembles, and
- Who demonstrate superior qualifications and superior performance during their audition
- Preference will be given to Maine residents
The AVANGRID David Flanagan Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Sustainability was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2022.
Income from the Fund shall be used to provide scholarships for graduate students enrolled full-time in MPPM (Master’s in Policy, Planning, and Management) or MPH (Master of Public Health) programs.
The John R. Babine Memorial Scholarship was established in 1973 by the family and friends of John R. Babine for the purpose of providing scholarship(s) to deserving students in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Southern Maine. Preference will be given to entering freshman who graduate from Deering High School in Portland, Maine.
The Dr. Francis L. Bailey Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1998 with a bequest from the estate of Nina Bailey. The income from the fund shall be used to make an annual award to a student based on several criteria, including financial need.
The Bank of America Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 2007 by the Bank of America Charitable Foundation. The scholarship is intended to benefit Maine students of low-to-moderate income from the School of Business.
The Bath Iron Works (BIW) Scholarship was established in 1990 by Bath Iron Works and its employees to provide scholarship aid to needy undergraduate students in good academic standing enrolled at a campus of the University of Maine System.
The Dean John W. Bay Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 2003 to honor Dr. John Bay, Dean Emeritus, upon his retirement.
The fund shall be used to honor a USM student who has begun to exhibit John Bay’s strong leadership, skills and devotion to the School of Business, the University, and the Southern Maine Community.
The A. Nye Bemis Memorial Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1983 in memory of A. Nye Bemis, former Assistant Professor of Education and Director of Professional Development Center and International Exchange. The income from the fund is to be awarded to a University of Southern Maine exchange student for cultural enrichment when abroad.
The Arthur and Judith Benoit Memorial Scholarship was established in 1981 at the University of Southern Maine in memory of Arthur H. Benoit, a Trustee of the University of Maine from 1957 – 1971, by family, friends and organizations in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the University and the community. The income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship support to a USM student with financial need and who demonstrates the qualities of leadership to the University and/or the community.
The Kenneth D. Benson Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2019 with distributions from the Kenneth D. Benson Family Trust. The fund shall be used for scholarships for business students.
The Robert W. Berry Memorial Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 2001 by Berry, Dunn, McNeil and Parker in memory of one of its founding partners, Robert W. Berry. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide assistance to qualified applicants pursuing business and technology education in the USM School of Business.
The William Bingham, II Scholarship was created at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine in 2016 with a gift from the Bingham Trust. Income from the fund shall support students attending USM’s School of Music.
The Blackwood Family Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 2000 by Robert ’78G, ’82 and Jill ’83G Blackwood to honor the South Portland Schools. Scholarships shall be awarded annually to one Blackwood Scholar, an incoming 1st year student graduating from South Portland High School. The award shall be renewed annually as long as the student is making adequate progress towards graduation.
The Bob Crewe Foundation Scholarship was created at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine in 2017 with a gift from the Bob Crewe Foundation. Income from the fund shall provide scholarships to incoming or continuing students enrolled full-time in USM’s School of Music who have demonstrated financial need. Recipients shall be recognized as the Bob Crewe Foundation Scholars.
The Boulos Veterans Promise Completion Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine in 2019 with a gift from the Foundation. Income from the fund shall be used for scholarships to veteran students as well as provide compensation for veteran students to work with the Promise Scholarship Coordinator to help provide academic and other supports to peer Boulos Veteran Promise Completion Scholars.
The Boyne Family Nursing Scholarship was created at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine in 2016 with a gift from the Boyne Foundation. Income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarships to nursing students with demonstrated financial need and academic strength. With a preference given to students interested in providing care for the elderly in health-care deprived areas, and an interest in staying in Maine to work after graduation.
The Brewer Family Scholarship Fund was established at the University of Southern Maine in 2022 from a gift received by the University of Southern Maine Foundation.
Funds shall provide one scholarship, or more depending on available funds, per year for Maine residents who are graduates of Gray-New Gloucester High School with a minimum GPA of 2.5, with a preference of a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Funds may be used for in-state tuition and fees to cover the gap in funding after all other available financial aid resources have been applied. The goal is to have the student(s) have no debt from tuition and fees. The funds shall not be used to cover room and board. This scholarship is intended to be renewable if the GPA requirements continue to be met, and as funds are available.
The Kenneth T. H. and Dena A. Brooks International Student Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1983 with gifts from family, friends, and associates in memory of Dena A. Brooks, wife of Kenneth T. H. Brooks, former president of Gorham State College. Income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to a USM student with financial need for study abroad or for foreign student with financial need for study at USM.
The Electa McLain Brown Endowed Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation in 2003 with a gift from Electa McLain Brown. Income from the endowed fund shall be used to provide financial assistance for tuition and fees to students within USM’s School of Business.
The Jacob M. Brown Memorial Scholarship was created at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine in 2020 with a gift from Jacob’s parents, James and Theresa Brown. Income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship support for students who are enrolled in USM’s School of Nursing program and are Maine residents, with preference to those with financial need and demonstrated community/volunteer service experiences.
The George Burk Art Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2021. Income from the fund shall be used to support students enrolled in the Art program, with preference given to those who excel in Painting/Drawing coursework.
The Campbell Family Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 2011 by Susan ’80 and Richard Campbell ’73, ’89. The income from the fund shall be used to provide annual award(s) to eligible students, undeclared at the time of decision.
The Capstone-Stepstone Housing Scholarship Fund was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2024 with a gift from Capstone Development Partners, LLC. Capstone Development Partners, LLC’s Stepstone program initiative provides seed money to Capstone’s university partners for a housing scholarship fund for deserving students.
Funds shall provide housing awards to USM students who are full-time, living in residence halls in Portland or Gorham, have a minimum GPA of 2.0 and are experiencing immediate need for housing assistance.
The Rick Carbonneau Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1989 by a gift from a friend of Richard W. Carbonneau, Jr. The fund shall provide one award per year the cost of tuition and room and board for the Stonecoast Writers Conference held each summer at the University of Southern Maine or $500, whichever is the larger amount.
The Aileen M. Carroll ’65 Endowed Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation in 2007 with a gift from the Estate of Aileen M. Carroll ’65. Income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to eligible students in genuine need of financial support.
The Thomas Robson Carper Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2022 with a gift from an anonymous donor. The scholarship shall be given annually to honor Professor Thomas Carper, former member of the faculty of English. Professor Carper was a writer, editor, poet, and musician. He is the author of three volumes of poetry and was known by students for his caring and generous nature.
Income from the fund shall be used to provide annual scholarship support to a student or students with demonstrated financial need, with preference given to English majors and students in the Arts and Humanities.
The Ellen Chickering Music Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine on behalf of the University of Southern Maine Foundation in 2005 with a gift from an anonymous source. Income from the endowed fund shall be used to provide a portion of USM’s tuition and fees for those students who enroll in the School of Music and who meet the criteria of the Music Talent Scholarship Eligibility Policy. Preference shall be given to undergraduate voice majors.
The ChrisAlice Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation in 2002 with gifts from James and Lillian ’06 Haversat. Income from the endowed fund shall be used to provide USM undergraduate and Muskie graduate students with a portion of USM tuition and fees as well as funds to attend conferences and other educational opportunities that foster leadership, expertise and commitment to service in the voluntary sector.
The Churchill Family Music Scholarship Fund was created at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2017. Funds shall be used to support USM students in pursuit of a college degree in vocal music education or performance.
The E. June Clark and Irene Watson Scholarship was established in 2007 at the University of Southern Maine Foundation with proceeds from the Estate of E. June Clark. Income from the fund shall be used for scholarship assistance to students who must be certified as nurse assistants or have comparable credentials interested in advancing in the field of nursing.
The Alfred Clarke Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1992 by Dennis Rogers ’72 to memorialize Alfred Clarke, USM Admissions Director from 1946 to 1971, whose help and kind service to incoming students is gratefully remembered by USM Alumni, faculty and staff. The scholarship is awarded annually to a business major for their junior year who is a Maine resident.
The Gene R. Cohen Entrepreneurial Scholarship Fund was created at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine in December 2014 with a gift from the Gene R. Cohen Charitable Foundation. The scholarship provides financial assistance to students attending USM’s School of Business who are engaged in entrepreneurial pursuits.
The Ronald Cole Music Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine in 2021 with gifts from grateful alumni and friends in honor of Ronald Cole, professor emeritus and founding director of the USM School of Music. Income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship support for tuition and fees for those students who enroll in the School of Music and who meet the criteria of the Music Scholarship Eligibility Policy.
The Nicholas D. Colucci ’63 Scholarship for Aspiring Teachers was created at the University of Southern Maine in 2009 on the occasion of Dr. Colucci’s retirement.
The Fund shall provide scholarship support to eligible USM students from Maine who are pursuing a State of Maine K-8 teacher’s certificate and have been admitted in the CEHD’s Teachers for Elementary and Middle Schools, or a related program.
Students must demonstrate excellent academic achievement; a commitment to learning and intellectual inquiry in liberal arts and sciences, and in professional education studies; and have a demonstrated financial need.
The Ruth V. Conley Scholarship Fund was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1981 with a bequest of Ruth V. Conley, alumna of Gorham, Class of 1925. The income only will be used for scholarships, with first preference to students in the School of Education and Human Development at the Gorham Campus.
The Chester W. Cooke Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2014 with a gift from Chester W. Cooke. The fund shall be used for scholarship support for a student with a demonstrated interest in the piano or organ.
The Richard and Melissa Costello Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1990 by Richard and Melissa ’52 Costello and their family and friends. Income from the fund shall be used to select recipients on the basis of academic achievement, leadership skills, good character, and the promise of becoming outstanding teachers.
The Crankstart Re-entry Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2021 with gifts received by the University of Southern Maine Foundation (USMF). Funds shall be used to provide scholarship awards and student recipients shall be referred to as “Crankstart Re-entry Scholars.” Crankstart Re-entry Scholarships may be awarded to students who meet all of the following requirements:
- Have experienced a cumulative gap in their education of five or more years
- Are at the undergraduate level and pursuing their first baccalaureate degree
- Anticipate workforce participation for a significant period of time subsequent to graduation and are ideally between the ages of 25 – 50
- Demonstrate financial need, non-traditional, low-income and under-served status, challenges and/or hardships, academic qualifications, achievements and promise and a commitment to obtaining their degree
- Are either full- or part-time students
The Dan Crewe & Reid Crewe Scholarship was created at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine in 2017 with a gift from Daniel N. Crewe. Income from the fund shall provide scholarships to incoming or continuing students enrolled full-time in USM’s School of Music who have demonstrated financial need. Recipients shall be recognized as the Dan Crewe and Reid Crewe Scholars.
The Christine Cummings ’27 Promise Endowed Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2022. President Glenn Cummings established this endowed scholarship in honor of his grandmother, a graduate of what was then known as the Gorham Normal School. In 2024, the donor changed the name of the scholarship (previously known as the Christine Cotton Lockery Cummings ’27 Scholarship for Elementary Educators) and the criteria to align with the Promise Scholars Program with a preference for a demonstrated interest in teacher education.
Income from the fund shall provide scholarship awards to cover a portion of tuition (on average, half tuition or more), room & board, fees, books and/or other expenses to bridge the gap in cost of attending USM.
The Mabel S. Daveis Scholarship was established in 1955 by the trustees of the Mabel and Mary Daveis Charitable Fund. Income from the fund shall be for scholarships to needy and deserving students.
The Marcella Lee Davis Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1996 with a bequest from the estate of Marcella Lee Davis, class of 1927 and 1964. Income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to one or more full time elementary education student(s) in the internship year of the teacher education program.
The John R. and Patricia H. DiMatteo Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1990 with a gift from John and Patricia DiMatteo. The income from the fund shall be used for general scholarship assistance for students who have attained sophomore, junior, or senior status.
The Tasha Dunham Memorial Book Fund for School Psychology was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation in 2006 with gifts designated to the Tasha Dunham Memorial Book Fund with the School of Education and Human Development. The income shall be used to provide funding to a psychology student for the purchase of books and supplies.
The Burchard A. Dunn Memorial Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1997 by the family and friends of Burchard Dunn. The income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to accounting and business students at the University of Southern Maine.
The Jack Eagleson Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2013. The fund was established by the Eagleson Institute, a non-profit foundation in memory of Jack M. Eagleson, Jr.
The fund shall be used to support two students per year with scholarship awards who meet the following criteria:
- Full or part-time enrollment status
- Demonstrated financial need
- Minimum of 2.5 GPA, and
- Enrollment in Biochemistry, Biology, or Engineering (Electrical or Mechanical.
The Angeliki Economopoulou Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2021 with gifts received by the University of Southern Maine Foundation (USMF).
Funds shall provide two scholarship awards per year in the amount of $1,500, or as funds are available, to USM students enrolled in USM’s Counselor Education program. Demonstrated financial need, community service, inclusiveness and multicultural sensitivity are required for eligibility.
The Lawrence and Pearl Fickett Educational Leadership Scholarship Fund was created at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 1989, with a gift from Mrs. Pearl W. Fickett. Income from the fund shall be used for scholarships by the School of Education and Human Development (SEHD) and provide a minimum of two scholarships each year. Awards will be based on financial need at the discretion of the Dean for the School of Education and Human Development (SEHD).
The Kaye Flanagan ’73 Promise Endowed Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation in 2024 for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2024 with assets from the Trust of the late Kathleen A. Flanagan.
The principal shall be permanently endowed and the distributions, as established by the Foundation’s Board of Directors, shall be used to provide scholarship awards to cover a portion of tuition (on average, half tuition or more), room and board, fees, books and/or other expenses to bridge the gap in cost of attending USM.
The David & Kaye ’73 Flanagan Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2024 with proceeds from the estate of Kathleen Flanagan.
Income from the Fund shall be used to provide need-based scholarships to USM students.
The Chip and Laura Foye Promise Endowed Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2024.
Income from the fund shall provide scholarship awards to cover a portion of tuition (on average, half tuition or more), room & board, fees, books and/or other expenses to bridge the gap in cost of attending USM.
The Gateway Mastering Studios Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 1994 through the Maine Business for USM Scholars Program. The fund shall be used for scholarship support of students majoring in music, with a minimum of 12 credits per semester, maintain a minimum GPA of 2.67 and enrolled in applied music and appropriate ensembles.
The Patricia Geary Memorial Scholarship was established in 1998 by gifts from friends and family of Patricia Geary, Dean of the University of Southern Maine College of Nursing. Income generated from the fund shall be used to make annual award(s) to Nursing student(s).
The Christopher ’04 and Lavinia ’04 Gelineau Memorial Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2022 with gifts received through the University of Southern Maine Foundation.
Funds shall provide two scholarships per year, $1,000 each award, or as funds are available,
each honoring the academic interests of each alumnus:
- Undergraduate student majoring in Information Technology or Cybersecurity, and
- Undergraduate student majoring in English or foreign languages
- If no eligible applicants in one area, two awards may be made within the other area
Preference shal be given to students with:
- Solid academic achievement overall, and exemplary high quality of performance in the subject area of their major academic field.
- Recommendation of at least one (1) faculty member who has direct classroom experience and knowledge of the student’s quality of work in their primary academic major.
- Conscientious student who demonstrates a strong motivation to succeed in their field of interest.
Other preferences may include:
- Service in the Maine National Guard,
- Maine or Vermont residency,
- Immigrants who aspire to United States citizenship, and,
- Meaningful experience that may be external to the University of Southern Maine
The Madeleine D. Giguere Scholarship Fund was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine in 2007 with a gift from the estate of Madeleine D. Giguere. Income from the fund shall provide scholarships for students who have a minimum GPA of 2.8 and demonstrate interest in French North American Studies and/or the local Franco-American community. Students eligible for tuition reimbursements may not apply.
The Horton P. and Mary Purkis Gilman Scholarship Award was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1984 in memory of Mary Purkis Gilman, wife of Horton P. Gilman, with gifts from family and friends in recognition of her commitment to American business and to the young people entering a business career.
Income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to a full or part time student(s) in the School of Business who embody the free enterprise spirit and have demonstrated involvement in extracurricular activity, work or community.
The Russell L. Glidden Social Justice Music Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 2024 with gifts received by the University of Southern Maine Foundation to honor the memory of Russ Glidden and extend his legacy. A kind and generous person, Russ was a singer and sang for many years with the Portland Community Chorus and the Portland Symphony’s Magic of Christmas Chorus, the Gorham Community Chorus and many other community and faith based groups. At the time of his passing he was President of the Phoenix Chorale Portland, a non-profit community organization formed to promote social justice through music.
The scholarship is for a USM music student with financial need who is in or is entering the third or fourth year of studies at the University. The scholarship is for a student with a demonstrated interest in promoting social justice in their past and future activities. Preference for a student who sings in the University Chorus, composes for, or directs such a group.
The Goldsworth/Philbrick Endowed Scholarship for Nursing was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2022.
Income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarships to undergraduate nursing students in their 3rd or 4th year of the nursing program, with demonstrated financial need, academic strength in the sciences with a minimum of GPA of 2.75 and a Maine resident. Preference for students interested in emergency nursing and an interest in working/practicing in Maine.
The Rebecca Goodale Book Arts Scholarship was created at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine in 2020 with gifts from friends and colleagues of Rebecca Goodale, honoring her impact to USM’s Book Arts academic program and the Kate Cheney Chappell ’83 Center for Book Arts. Income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship support for students in the visual arts, with preference for a declared Book Arts minor.
The Leon and Lisa Gorman Scholarship for transfer students was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation in 2004 with a gift from Leon and Lisa Gorman. Income from the endowed fund shall be used to provide financial assistance for tuition and fees to students transferring to USM from regionally accredited institutions of higher education.
The Gorman Scholars Graduate Fund was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation in 2006 with gifts from Leon and Lisa Gorman. John and Barbara Staples also provided important support for the endowment. Income from the fund shall be used to provide financial assistance for tuition and fees to graduate Maine students, who are taking at least 6 credit hours per semester, have a GPA of 3.0 and have financial need. To renew the scholarship, a student must be in good standing and achieve a 3.3 GPA. At least once scholarship will be awarded to an Extended Teach Education Program student.
The Gorman Scholars Undergraduate Fund was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation in 2006 with gifts from Leon and Lisa Gorman. John and Barbara Staples also generously supported this scholarship fund. The income from the fund will support students whose last institution attended was any college within the Maine Community College System, with a minimum transfer GPA of 3.0 preferred and 24 earned credit hours, are Maine residents and enrolled full-time with academic potential and financial need.
The Graduate Students OLLI Fellowship Fund was established at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2021 with a gift from the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. The fund shall be used to provide scholarship support for fellowship opportunities for USM graduate students.
The Charles N. Greene Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1994 to honor Charles N. Greene, professor of Management and Organizational Behavior. Income from the fund shall be used for scholarship assistance to a School of Business student who possesses a 3.0 GPA and is a Business Administration major.
The Catharine Wilder Guiles Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2013. Catharine W. Guiles established an endowment fund at the Maine Community Foundation (MCF).
The Catharine Wilder Guiles Scholarship Fund provides scholarship assistance to encourage Maine-based professionals (including, but not limited to, nurses, counselors, and social workers) in the mental health field to obtain the best graduate level training possible at the University of Southern Maine. Specifically, the annual budget is to be split evenly into two awards: School of Social Work for graduate study in the field of mental health/psychiatric social work and School of Nursing for graduate study in the field of mental health/psychiatric nursing.
The GWI (Great Works Internet) Cybersecurity Internship Program Fund was established at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2021 from gifts received through the University of Southern Maine Foundation.
The fund shall be used to provide paid internships for USM students selected to intern at Great Works Internet and be given the title of Cybersecurity Ambassador. Interns perform a variety of research, training creation and community outreach tasks related to cybersecurity.
The Elizabeth S. Hagar Endowed Music Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation in 2005 with a gift from the Elizabeth S. Hagar Estate designated to the School of Music. The earnings from the Elizabeth S. Hagar Endowed Music Scholarship will be an unrestricted fund that can be used annually for scholarships at the discretion of the Director of the School of Music.
The Hagge/Dodd Family Scholarship was created at the University of Southern Maine Foundation in 2013 by Cyrus Hagge ’83, ’85G, ‘18H and Patricia Dodd ’85, ’06G to provide financial support for incoming or current students majoring in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.
The A. Carolla Haglund ’51 Scholarship was created at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine in 2016 with a bequest gift from the A. Carolla Haglund Trust. The fund shall be used for scholarships for worthy students (average GPA of 3.0 or better) who wish to study abroad, and for international students who wish to study at the University of Southern Maine.
The Owen C. Hall Scholarship was established in 1980 at the University of Southern Maine with gifts from family, friends, faculty and staff. Income from the fund shall be used annually to provide scholarships to one or more accounting students who have demonstrated potential for making significant contributions to the accounting profession. Recipients must be a junior or senior, majoring in accounting, who has demonstrated superiority in ability and achievement. No student may receive this award more than once.
The Lewis Arch Hamblen Scholarship Endowment was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation in 2004 with a gift from the Grace D. Hamblen Trust and gifts from other family and friends. Income from the endowed fund shall be used to provide a portion of University of Southern Maine tuition and fees for those students who enroll in the University of Southern Maine’s College of Education and Human Development planning to teach.
The Stewart Belknap Hamblen Scholarship Endowment was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation in 2004 with a gift from the Grace D. Hamblen Trust and a gift from an anonymous source. The scholarship shall be used to provide a portion of University of Southern Maine tuition and fees for those students who enroll in the University of Southern Maine’s College of Education and Human Development planning to teach.
The Almery R. and Kathleen Hamblen Scholarship was established in 2013 at the University of Southern Maine Foundation with a gift from the Kathleen and Almery Hamblen Trust, of which Almery Hamblen ’37, ’39 is the trustee. The scholarship shall provide financial support for eligible students pursuing a teacher education program or another related discipline.
The Joseph A. and Nellie Elkins Hamblen Scholarship was established in 2013 at the University of Southern Maine Foundation with a gift from the Kathleen and Almery Hamblen Trust, of which Almery Hamblen ’37, ’39 is the trustee. Income from the fund shall provide financial support for eligible students pursuing a teacher education program or another related discipline.
The Judith Hannemann Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 2001 with a gift from Mrs. Judith Hannemann. The income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to students with financial need, completed 45 credit hours and have a grade point average of 3.0. Selection of the recipients shall be made by the USM General Scholarship Committee.
The Hervey A. Hanscom Scholarship Fund was initiated from the Hervey Hanscom Trust Fund, established in 1954, income from the trust property will provide aid for any needy and deserving student or students from the Town of Lebanon Maine, entering or attending Gorham State Teachers’ College or its successor.
The Laura B. Hansen Memorial Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1993 with a bequest from the estate of Laura B. Hansen ’27. Income from the fund shall be used to make annual awards to three full-time students in the ETEP program in the College of Education.
The Helen Heel Music Scholarship was created at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2019 with gifts from grateful alumni and friends in honor of Helen Heel, former music professor at USM. Income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship support for tuition and fees for those students who enroll in the School of Music and who meet the criteria of the Music Scholarship Eligibility Policy.
The Anne Randolph Henry Scholarship Fund was established at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2013. The fund shall be used to provide scholarship support for needy students entering or attending the School of Music.
The Edna L. Higgins Scholarship was established in 1974 by a bequest from Edna Higgins. Income from the fund shall be given to students on the basis of financial need with preference given to students from the Greater Portland Area, including Portland, South Portland, Westbrook, Cumberland, Falmouth, Gorham, Cape Elizabeth and Scarborough.
The Margaret E. Johnson Hill ’38, ’54 Scholarship was established in 2013 at the University of Southern Maine Foundation with a bequest from the estate of Margaret E. Hill ’38, ’54. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide financial support for the students who are planning to teach in elementary education.
The Hoar Family Endowed Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation in 2002 with a gift from Emmeline (Lynn) A. Hoar in memory of her husband Gerald W. Hoar ’50 and her daughter Sharon Lynn Thompson, who were both dedicated teachers. Income from the endowed fund shall be used to provide financial assistance for tuition and fees to students within USM’s College of Education and Human Development.
The Janet Hodgdon Harrison ’52 Memorial Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2022.
Income from the fund shall be used to provide annual scholarship support to undergraduate students in the School of Education preparing for a teaching career, with preference given to students majoring in Elementary Education and with demonstrated financial need.
The Brian C. Hodgkin Dean’s Scholarship was created at the University of Southern Maine (“USM”) in 1999.
Income from the fund shall be used for scholarships to students who have been accepted or are enrolled in the College of Science, Technology and Health (CSTH), are able to achieve the requisite grade point average of continuing students and have financial need. This award will be made each year beginning with the fall semester to a full or part-time student but may be applied to tuition both in the academic year and during the summer. Scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded, with additional awards as funds are available.
The William Gordon Hooper ’30 and Laura Snow Hooper ’32 Annuity was established in May 1997 at the University of Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine (USM). The Hooper Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2006 at the completion of the William Gordon Hooper ’30 and Laura Snow Hooper ’32 Annuity.
Recipients must be enrolled at least half-time (6 hours per semester), with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to students majoring in Technology Management (or other successor program) with priority going to non-traditional students.
The Frances M. Howarth Scholarship Fund was established in 1961 with a bequest from Nellie M. Howarth in memory of her sister, Frances M. Howarth. The Fund shall be used for scholarship support for any students in the teacher education program both undergraduate and graduate.
The Dexter Huntoon Memorial Fund was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1986 in memory of Dexter Huntoon, an outstanding counselor and supervisor of graduate students in counseling, in the Office of Counseling and Career Development. A scholarship is awarded annually to a student in the Counselor Education Graduate Program who has demonstrated great promise in the field of counseling.
The Steven O. Innes Memorial Scholarship was established in 2012 at the University of Southern Maine Foundation with gifts from Steven’s family and friends. Steven was an exceptionally talented machinist, amateur astronomer and an employee of the Southworth Planetarium and the College of Science, Technology and Health at USM. The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarships to USM Students in the Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Technology departments.
The Philip and Joan ’72 Jagolinzer Scholarship in Accounting was created at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2016 with a distribution from a Charitable Remainder Unitrust established by Philip Jagolinzer in 2001.
The Arthur and Marguerite Johnson Memorial Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1997 with a bequest from the Estate of Marguerite V. Johnson. Income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to USM students entering the Extended Teacher Education Program. Preference will be given to students preparing to teach science.
The Constantine Kapothanasis Accounting Scholarship Fund was established at the University of Southern Maine in 2025 with gifts received by the University of Southern Maine Foundation.
Funds shall provide up to $2,350 per year to be awarded to one student, split over two semesters of the academic year. Preference for an accounting major with a minimum GPA of 2.0 who demonstrates promise and has a good attitude.
The Dara J. Kaufman ’05 Memorial Scholarship for International Study began in 2007 at the University of Southern Maine (USM) to honor Dara’s love of learning, travel and adventure. Dara died in a tragic accident six months after graduation. In 2015, the scholarship was formalized by the donor and USM.
The fund shall be used to provide scholarship support for high-achieving USM students who wish to study abroad as part of an approved program and who otherwise would be unable to financially do so. As a Dara J. Kaufman Scholar, a recipient must be a full-time Maine resident, have a minimum GPA of 3.2, be enrolled as an undergraduate degree candidate and demonstrate financial need.
The Anna Keating Endowed Scholarship Fund was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation in 2003 with proceeds from the Keating Charitable Remainder Unitrust. Income from the endowed fund shall be used to provide financial assistance for tuition and fees to students majoring in the fields of Elementary and/or High School Education at the University of Southern Maine.
The Dr. Elizabeth F. Kerr Memorial Scholarship Endowment was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation in 2007 with gifts from family members. Income from the fund shall be used for scholarship assistance to ETEP students in USM’s College of Education and Human Development, with preference given to students pursuing science education.
The Key Bank Endowed Scholarship in Honor of Kenneth Curtis was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation in 2004 with gifts from Key Bank in honor of Kenneth M. Curtis. Income from the endowed fund shall be used to provide financial assistance for tuition and fees to students within USM’s Edmund S. Muskie School of Public Service.
The Ann Kleban Memorial Scholarship Fund was established at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2022 from a gift received by the University of Southern Maine Foundation.
The fund shall be used to provide scholarship support to USM students who have encountered a family emergency that results in an inability for the student to pay their tuition. Students may request scholarship funds for an emergency situation of unanticipated and compelling circumstances that jeopardize their ability to successfully continue in school. The amounts and frequency of each award will be made on a case by case basis.
The L.L. Bean Environmental Science Endowed Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation (“Foundation”) for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2022.
Income from the fund shall be used for scholarship support for environmental science majors, based on academic merit requiring a minimum GPA of 3.0.
The Lucille T. Laliberte Working Mother Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 2008 with a gift from Lucille T. Laliberte. Income from the fund shall be used to provide financial assistance to a single female custodial guardian with at least one dependent child, who is enrolled as a part time or full-time student at USM’s Lewiston-Auburn College.
The Charles H. & Bertha F. Loomis Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1998 with a gift from Miss Esther E. Wood, former professor, in honor of her long friendship with Mr. and Mrs. Loomis. Income generated from the Fund shall be awarded annually to entering Junior or Senior undergraduate students at USM who possess a 3.0 grade point average.
The Lorelle’s Fund for Nursing Students was created at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine in December 2014 with a gift from Lorelle Pelletier. Income from the fund shall be used for scholarships or course-related financial support for graduate and undergraduate student(s) enrolled in USM’s School of Nursing with financial need. Awards shall be granted to any individual student no more than three times.
The Najeeb S. Lotfey Scholarship was established in 2014 with a pledge from Macpage, LLC. The fund shall be used for scholarship support for a School of Business accounting student entering their junior or senior year who shows promise in the accounting field.
The Lunder Scholars Endowed Fund was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation in 2003 with a gift from the Lunder Foundation. Income from the endowed fund shall be used to provide financial assistance for graduate and undergraduate students for tuition and fees to USM students, with first preference to former Dexter Shoe Company employees and their children, and second preference to Maine residents.
The Ronald J. Macdougall Endowed Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2023 with a gift from Ronald J. Macdougall.
Income from the endowed Fund shall be used to provide scholarship support to students who enroll in the Osher School of Music and who meet the criteria of the Music Talent Scholarship Eligibility Policy. Preference shall be given to undergraduate voice majors. Recipients will be chosen through the music audition process open to all prospective music majors who audition prior to the published deadline.
The Maine Association of Broadcasters Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 1995 by the Maine Association of Broadcasters. The fund shall be used for scholarship support of students who are Maine residents intending to pursue a career in broadcasting and have demonstrated financial need.
The Maine Beer Company Scholarship Fund was established at the University Southern Maine (USM) in 2021 with gifts received by the University of Southern Maine Foundation (USMF). Funds shall provide scholarship support to USM undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need, with a preference for students enrolled in any major connected to environmental work. Each recipient may receive a scholarship of up to $5,000 per academic year or up to $2,500 per semester for up to two academic years or four semesters.
The Maine Insurance Agents Association Scholarship was created at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine in 2020 with a gift from the Maine Insurance Agents Association. Income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship support for full or part time undergraduate, degree-seeking students. At least one scholarship for $1,000 will be awarded each year, with the possibility that a second award $1,000 may be awarded, as funds are available.
The Maine Society of Certified Public Accountants USM Endowed Scholarship was created at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2012 with a gift from the Educational Research Foundation of Maine Society of Certified Public Accountants. Income from the Fund, as determined by the USM Foundation Board of Directors, will be used to provide scholarship aid for full-time, undergraduate University of Southern Maine Students, who are majoring in accounting.
The Mainebiz Next List Alumni Scholarship Fund was established at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2017 with a gift from the Maine Community Foundation. The Fund shall be used to provide scholarship support to a student who is a resident of Maine in their 3rd or 4th year pursuing a B.S in Business Administration with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
The Helen D. ’85 & Waldeck Mainville, Jr. Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2005 with gifts from family and friends on the occasion of Professor Mainville’s retirement from the University.
The fund shall be used for scholarship support to entering junior or senior mathematics majors who desire to enter the teaching profession.
The March of Dimes Nursing Scholarship was established in 1977 with a gift from the March of Dimes. Income from the fund shall be used for a scholarship for a nursing student.
The Marr-Anderson Family Foundation Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2022 from a gift received by the University of Southern Maine Foundation (USMF).
Funds shall be used for two annual scholarships for students with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and demonstrated financial need. Scholarships shall be awarded to a student matriculated in an Education related major and one scholarship shall be used for a student matriculated in Business related major. Scholarship recipients must be U.S. citizens or legal residents of the U.S.
The Charles and Sylvia Martin Memorial Scholarship was created at the University of Southern Maine in 2001 with gifts from family and friends. The income from the Fund shall be used to provide one scholarship to either a student who is pursuing a minor in education or to a student enrolled in the Extended Teacher Education Program.
The Peter Martin Music Scholarship was created at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine in 2018 with gifts from grateful alumni and friends in honor of Peter Martin, professor emeritus and longtime director of bands at USM. Income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship support for tuition and fees for those students who enroll in the School of Music and who meet the criteria of the Music Scholarship Eligibility Policy. Preference will be given to woodwind, brass, harp or percussion student(s).
The Margaret McKenna Memorial Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1996 with gifts from Dr. Margaret Early. The income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to a student in the Literacy Education Program of the College of Education.
The Gloria and Edwin Medley Fund for International Studies was established in 2013 at the University of Southern Maine Foundation with proceeds from a charitable gift annuity funded by Gloria B. Medley in 2008. Income from the fund shall provide scholarships for students who are: Maine residents, and are incoming, transferring to, or currently enrolled at USM, and have a concentration in international studies and/or an interest in study abroad.
The Charles J. and Judith F. ‘87G Micoleau Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2018 with gifts from both Charles and Judith Micoleau.
The fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to graduate students, enrolled in programs within the Muskie School of Public Service, in good academic standing.
The Bronwyn Millard Memorial Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1989 by a gift from Drs. Margaret and Ben Millard in memory of their daughter, Bronwyn. The income from the fund (to include appreciation) shall be used to provide one scholarship awarded annually to a student majoring in Theatre.
The Alden W. ’47 and Marian Hall ’46 Mitchell Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 2012 with a gift of a ‘Charitable Gift Annuity’ from Alden W and Marian Hall Mitchell. Marian graduated from Gorham State Teachers College in 1946 and Alden in 1947. The fund shall be used for scholarships to students in the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences who aspire to teach.
The Wensel W. Moberg Memorial Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1975 in memory of Wensel Moberg who taught geography at Gorham from 1954 to 1971. The interest from this endowment is awarded annually to a dedicated student who demonstrates ability and willingness to give of self to the University and/or community life.
The Mondor Memorial Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2023 with memorial gifts received from family, friends and colleagues of Dean of Students, Rodney Mondor through the University of Southern Maine Foundation (USMF). Dean of Students, Rodney Mondor lost his son to an accidental overdose of fentanyl. “Always Student Focused Every Day”, the Mondor Memorial Scholarship is intended to support a University of Southern Maine student who is committed to and practicing a pathway of recovery from addiction.
The Kim Moody ’82 and Family Scholarship was created at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine in 2016 with a gift from Kimberly Moody ’82. Income from the fund shall support nursing students with demonstrated financial need and academic strength. Preference shall be given to underrepresented students either by being a racially or ethnically diverse or a first-generation college student who have an interest in staying in Maine upon graduation.
The Beth Moore Scholarship Fund was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1981 in memory of Professor Beth Moore with gifts from family and friends. The fund shall be used for financial support to a student in the master’s reading program at USM.
The Dorothy & Richard Moore Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 2002 with a gift from Dr. & Mr. Moore. In September of 2004, the donors requested that the account become endowed. The income generated from this fund will be awarded annually to Maine residents who are graduate students in the Counselor Education or ETEP programs at the College of Education and Human Development at USM.
The Ethel Noyes Mortensen Scholarship Fund was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation in 2006 with proceeds from the Estate of Donald N. Mortensen. The Fund is named for Mr. Mortensen’s mother, Ethel, who was a nurse and 1899 graduate of Deering High School. The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarship support for students in the College of Nursing and Health professions Bachelor of Science in the Nursing Program.
The Edmund S. Muskie Memorial Scholarship was originally established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the Edmund S. Muskie School of Public Service at the University of Southern Maine. The endowment was created with gifts designated to the Muskie School. The purpose of the fund shall be to provide scholarships for students in the Muskie School of Public Service.
The Nicholas M. and Jean M. Nappi Scholarship was established in 1989 by Mr. and Mrs. Nappi. The fund shall be used for scholarship support for students graduating from a Maine high school. The recipient must be in good academic standing at USM or if an incoming student, be in the top 50% of the graduating class.
The Nora and Grace Nason Scholarship was established in 1967 under the Nora P. Nason Trust. The funds are to be used as a scholarship, to be administered by the trustees of the college.
The Dr. Robert V. Nelson Memorial Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2018 with gifts received by the University of Southern Maine Foundation (USMF).
The fund shall be used to provide scholarship support for students enrolled at USM who are: residents of Maine with financial need and majoring in biology, chemistry or physics and are in good academic standing.
The Nelson & Small Prize Endowed Fund was transferred from the University of Southern Maine to the USM Foundation in 2004. The income from the fund shall be used to fund a prize to be known as the Nelson & Small Prize and shall be awarded to a person who has made significant contributions to the USM Engineering Program, whether or not that person is an employee of USM.
The Jane V. Nelson Last Mile Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine in 2018 with proceeds directed from the estate of Jane V. Nelson to her children, Lars Nelson and Susan Carver. Lars Nelson and Susan Carver allocated a portion of their individual distributions to honor their mother’s wishes to give a sizable amount of money to USMF for student scholarships, in her name. Income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship support for undergraduate students who have exhausted their financial aid and are within one to two semesters of graduation/degree completion.
The Donald E. and Hilda Nicoll Endowed Scholarship was established in 2006 at the University of Southern Maine by the Muskie School Board of Visitors for the benefit of the USM Muskie School of Public Service. This endowment is created to provide financial assistance for tuition and fees to incoming students at the Muskie School to ensure the highest quality of education for students at the Muskie School.
This scholarship was created to help recruit top quality students to the Muskie program and to honor Don Nicoll, a longtime member of the Muskie Board of Visitors and an exemplary public servant to the state of Maine.
The Donald E. Nicoll/Edmund S. Muskie Board of Visitors Scholarship was created in 1998 by the Edmund S. Muskie School of Public Policy Board of Visitors. The fund shall be used to make annual awards to Public Policy students. Selection will be based on several criteria, including financial need and academic promise.
The NiSource Charitable Foundation Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2004 with a gift from the NiSource Charitable Foundation.
Income from the endowed Fund shall be used to provide scholarship support to students are majoring in science, engineering, or technology programs; having completed at least 30 credit hours toward their major, of which at least 15 credits have been completed at USM. Students must be registered for at least 6 credit hours during the semester of the award and have a minimum GPA of 3.0.
The Lillian LaFontaine O’Brien ’52 Scholarship was created at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine in 2017 with gifts from Lillian LaFontaine O’Brien ’52 and extended family. Income from the fund shall provide scholarship support.
The Harold ‘94H and Peggy ‘94H Osher Fellowship Fund was created at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2024. The fund shall be used to provide annual fellowships for a minimum of $1,500 each, or as funds are available. One or both fellowships may not be provided in any given year if applicants are not qualified.
1) The Harold L. Osher Cartographic Research Fellowship, which provides a stipend in support of a research project engaging the Osher Map Library and Smith Center for Cartographic Education collections.
2) The Peggy L. Osher Visiting Artist Fellowship, which provides a stipend in support of a creative project engaging the Osher Map Library and Smith Center for Cartographic Education collections.
The Dr. Alfred Osher and D. Suzi Osher Endowed Scholarship was created at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine in 2015 with a gift from D. Suzi Osher. Income from the fund shall be used for scholarships for students who have been at USM for a least a year, with minimum GPA 3.0 and with financial need.
The Osher Reentry Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 2009 by the Bernard Osher Foundation. Scholarships should be awarded to students who have experienced a cumulative gap in their education of at least five years and anticipate participation in the workforce for a significant period of time subsequent to graduation. Scholarship awards must be applied to student tuition fees exclusively.
The Otis Family Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 2013 with a gift from James C. Otis ’76. The fund shall be used for scholarship support for Maine student(s) in the School of Business with preference given to accounting and/or finance majors.
The Dorothy B. Padula Endowed Memorial Fund for Student Travel to Latin America was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation in 2001 with gifts from an anonymous donor. Income from the endowed fund shall be used to encourage and facilitate travel and education by University of Southern Maine students in Latin America.
The Viola Palmacci Nursing Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine 1989 by family, friends, and associates at the University of Southern Maine to honor Mrs. Palmacci’s 26 years of distinguished service to the University and to the community as Coordinator of Student Health Services on the Portland campus. The interest from the fund shall be used to make an annual award to a nursing student in good academic standing who has attained junior, senior, or graduate class status.
The Palmer Family Scholarship was created at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine in 2020 with gifts from John E. Palmer, Jr. and Denise Palmer. Income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship support for students who are Maine residents and have demonstrated financial need. Preference for award amounts is a minimum of $1,000 each, or as funds are available.
The Susan L. Palmer Endowed Scholarship for Rural Maine Students was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2022. After a lifetime of service and dedication, this endowment honors Sue’s fifty outstanding years of service to the University of Maine System both at the University of Maine Machias and the University of Southern Maine and the impact she has made on so many lives.
Income from the fund shall be used to provide annual scholarship support USM students with demonstrated financial need from rural Maine, with a preference for students from Washington County.
The Barbara A. Payne Scholarship Fund was established in 1978 with a gift from Lillian and Judd Payne in memory of their daughter, Barbara Ann who was an alum of the Gorham Class of 1950. The Fund shall be used for scholarship support for any students in the teacher education program both undergraduate and graduate.
The Herbert and Sally Carroll Payson Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1995 by gifts from the Payson family. Income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to an entering music student at the University of Southern Maine.
The Margaret M. Payson Nursing Fund was established in 1986 to supplement the salary of the Director of the University of Maine’s School of Nursing. The fund is being changed to an endowment fund, with income now to be used for either research or scholarships. The fund shall be administered by the Dean of the School of Nursing at USM.
The James W. Pendleton Award was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation in 2002 with a gift from James Pendleton. In 2015, at the donor’s request, the fund was revised to support students in Environment Sciences because the Geosciences program is no longer offered at USM. The income from the fund shall be used for scholarship support for students with a demonstrated interest in environmental sciences.
The M. Ruth Perry Memorial Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 2001 with a gift from the Estate of M. Ruth Perry, Class of 1927. The income shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to students who plan upon graduation to engage in the teaching profession.
The Richard S. Petereit Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1988 by gifts from family and friends in memory of Richard S. Petereit. The income from the fund shall be used to make an annual scholarship award to a theatre student.
The Phi Kappa Phi Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 2000 by the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, Chapter 173. The Fund shall be used to assist students who have membership in Phi Kappa Phi.
The Pond Family Foundation Scholarship Fund was established in 2007 at the University of Southern Maine Foundation with a gift from the Pond Family Foundation. Income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to students with a financial need who are entering or transferring to USM.
The Portland Press Herald Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 2010 with a gift from the Maine Community Foundation/Portland Press Herald.
The fund shall be used to award a scholarship to an incoming freshman, renewable for up to 7 semesters. An eligible recipient must be a high school graduate with a 2.5 GPA, Maine resident with demonstrated financial need, as determined by the FAFSA and underrepresented either by being racially or ethnically diverse, or a first-generation college student.
Recipient must be enrolled full-time in a degree program that compliments the business of Maine Today media. This includes but is not limited to: Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Management, Human Resources, Computer Science, Information & Communication Technology, and Communications and Media studies.
The Presser Undergraduate Scholar Award was established at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2015 with gifts from the Presser Foundation. The fund shall be used for one scholarship award per year to a student who has achieved a high level of musical and academic excellence and has exemplified diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice values. To be eligible, the nominated student must be currently enrolled as a full-time or part-time undergraduate music major at the end of their final year of study.
The Promise Scholarship Fund was created at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2017 with a gift from Carolyn C. and Richard J. McGoldrick. In February 2019, the GPA requirements were adjusted to bring it in line with other USM merit aid requirements. Income from the fund shall provide scholarship awards to cover a portion of tuition (on average, half tuition or more), room & board, fees, books and/or other expenses to bridge the gap in cost of attending USM.
The ROCC (Recovery Oriented Campus Center) Gratitude Scholarship was created at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2023. The Funds shall be used to provide scholarship support to undergraduate students who self-identify as in recovery for alcohol and/or drug addiction.
The Mildred A. Roche Nursing Scholarship Fund was established at USM in 1988 in recognition of Mildred A. Roche’s lifelong dedication to the art and science of nursing both as a practitioner and a USM Nursing faculty member. The fund shall be used to make an annual award to a full-time nursing student with junior or senior standing. The recipient will be selected by the Dean and faculty of the School of Nursing in consultation with the Director of Student Financial Aid. Selection will be based on scholastic achievement, demonstrated proficiency in nursing, and dedication to the ideals of the profession.
The Allan C. Rodway ’73 Memorial Scholarship Fund was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1998 with a gift from Irene Rodway Madden ’66 in memory of her brother, Allan, who graduated from Deering High School. Income from the fund shall be used for scholarship support for graduates of any Maine high school.
The Marjorie Roscoe Memorial Nursing Scholarship was created at the University of Southern Maine in 1997 with a bequest from Marjorie Roscoe. Income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to nursing students with preference given to students from Vinalhaven, Maine.
The Frances Allen Rossiter Nursing Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2022 from a gift received by the University of Southern Maine Foundation.
The fund shall be used to provide scholarship support for students from Maine enrolled in USM’s School of Nursing who have demonstrated financial need. Preference for these scholarships shall be given to first-generation college students.
The Royer Advisors & Accountants Scholarship Fund was established at the University of Southern Maine in 2013 by Royer Advisors and Accountants, (previously known as Berry Talbot Royer, Certified Public Accountants) to provide financial support for accounting majors at the University of Southern Maine.
The fund shall be used for scholarship support for students in USM’s School of Business who are majoring in accounting. Recipients should be juniors or seniors starting in the fall semester of the year they are receiving the scholarship. Scholarships will be awarded based on academic merit with a minimum GPA of 3.3. The preference is for a GPA of 3.5 or higher. There will be two awards per year: Royer Advisors & Accountants – Excellence in Accounting Scholarship and Royer Advisors & Accountants – Outstanding Achievement Scholarship.
The Systems Engineering Scholarship Fund was established at the University of Southern Maine in 2011. The fund shall be used for scholarship assistance for Maine residents, junior level students or higher, with a declared major in Information Science or related field (Computer Science, Information and Communications Technology, or Computer Engineering) within the College of Science, Technology and Health (CSTH).
The Robert Russell Music Scholarship was created at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine in 2018 with gifts from grateful alumni and friends in honor of Robert Russell, professor emeritus and longtime choral director at USM. Income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship support for tuition and fees for those students who enroll in the School of Music and who meet the criteria of the Music Scholarship Eligibility Policy. Preference will be given to voice student(s).
The Walter E. Russell Scholarship Fund was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1989 by a gift from the University of Southern Maine Alumni Association. The income from the shall be used to provide an annual award to a student who shows promise in the teaching profession.
The C. Elizabeth Sawyer Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1992 by family and friends in honor of C. Elizabeth Sawyer, Assistant Professor Emerita of English 1943-1971. The fund shall be used for scholarship support for any English Majors with a Grade Point Average of 3.0 or higher.
The Sandra T. Scully Nursing Scholarship was created at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine in June 2014 with a donation from Sandra Scully. The fund shall be used for scholarship support for student(s) enrolled in the University of Southern Maine’s School of Nursing. Preference will be given to transfer or non-traditional students.
The Shaw Innovation Fellows Program was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine in 2021 with a gift from David Evans Shaw ‘76G, ‘15H.
The Mabel Skillin Nursing Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1995 by the Simmons Foundation. The fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to nursing students with preference given to residents of Cumberland County.
The Martha M. Skoner Memorial Nursing Scholarship was established in 2012 at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the School of Nursing at the University of Southern Maine. The Fund was created with gifts from the Estate of Martha M. Skoner. Income from the fund shall be used to fund scholarships for the School of Nursing.
The SME Scholarship was established in 1989 by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers Chapter 46, Portland, Maine. The fund shall be used for scholarship support for students majoring in degree programs within the Department of Technology.
The SMRT Stevens Scholarship (“Fund”) was established at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in
2023 from a gift received by the University of Southern Maine Foundation (USMF) in support of students
studying in areas that support Architect and Engineering professions through sustainability and
thoughtful, quality design and art.
Funds shall provide scholarships of at least $1,000 each award, or as funds are available, for students
with demonstrated financial need. To align with our purpose, preference should be given to students
majoring in any of the following areas: engineering, visual and performing arts, accounting, art and
entrepreneurial studies, entrepreneurship, finance, geography-anthropology -sustainable cultures and
community specialization, industrial management, management, marketing.
Preference should be given to students who have completed an application which includes a statement
that their course of study supports sustainability and thoughtful, quality design and art. Faculty
recommendations may also be accepted in accordance with the donor’s stated purpose.
The Dorothy L. Snowman Scholarship for Teaching was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2005 with a gift from Dr. Margaret J. Early in memory of her editor and long-time friend Dorothy L. Snowman. Income from the fund shall provide scholarships to USM students planning to become a teacher and who are residing in or graduated from a high school in Aroostook County, Maine.
The Virginia Hodgkins Somers Foundation Endowed Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 2007 by the Virginia Hodgkins Somers Foundation. This fund will provide scholarship support to students who are Maine residents, enrolled in the School of Education and Human Development, and have an identified financial need. Preference is given to students from York County, Maine.
The Southern Maine Gorham Alumni Association Endowed Scholarship Fund was established at the University of Southern Maine on behalf of the University of Southern Maine Foundation in 2003 with a gift from the Southern Maine Gorham Alumni Association.
The scholarship shall provide financial assistance for tuition and fees to students within USM’s School of Education and Human Development.
The Edith Speziali Endowed Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation in 2003 with a gift from an anonymous donor. Income from the endowed fund shall be used to provide financial assistance for tuition and fees to students within USM’s School of Music.
The Joseph and Betty Stocks (’82) Nursing Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 2024.
The Fund was established to provide two scholarships to two nursing practitioner students per year with demonstrated financial need. Preference is given to students with families residing in Maine with a desire to work in Maine, especially in rural areas.
The Dr. James V. Sullivan Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1991 by the family and friends of Dr. James V. Sullivan. Recipients shall be students in good standing of the College of Science, Technology and Health (CSTH)
majoring in Therapeutic Recreation. The amount and number of awards shall be based on available funds.
The John M. ‘72G and Annie T. Sutton Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2004 with a gift from John M. Sutton, Jr. ‘72G, Professor Emeritus of Counselor Education. Professor Sutton taught at the University of Southern Maine full-time for twenty-six years and an additional eleven years on a part-time basis.
The Fund shall be used to provide scholarship support to a graduate student matriculated in the School of Education and Human Development’s Counselor Education program. Eligible students in the Counselor Education program will have shown commitment to and demonstrated the potential to become significant leaders in the profession of counseling. The Franklin Talbot Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1996 with a gift from Franklin Talbot. The income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to a graduate education student in the College of Education and Human Development.
The Grannia Theatre Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1990 by a gift from Mr. Edward R. Wollenberg. Income from the fund (to include appreciation) shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to a student majoring in theatre.
The Shirley Towle ’45 Memorial Scholarship for Aspiring Teachers was established in 2012 at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the School of Education at the University of Southern Maine. The Fund was created with gifts from the Towle Family Trust, Shirley Towle. Income from the fund shall be used to award scholarships to undergraduate students who plan to pursue a career in teaching.
The Audway and Phyllis Treworgy Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1998 by Miss Esther E. Wood in honor of her long friendship with Mr. and Mrs. Treworgy. The income generated from this fund will be awarded annually to entering Junior or Senior Arts and Sciences undergraduate students at USM who possess a 3.0 grade point average.
The Juris Ubans Art Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2021 with a gift from Professor Juris Ubans.
The fund shall be used to provide scholarship support for USM art majors focusing on painting, drawing and/or printmaking.
The USM Alumni Association of Florida Chapter, Madelyn and Marion Ulmer Memorial Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1989 with gifts made by the Florida Chapter of the University of Southern Maine Alumni Association. The name of the fund was changed from the Florida Chapter of the University of Southern Maine Alumni Association Scholarship Fund in 2015 in accordance with the Chapter’s President’s request and authorization dated June 18, 1999. Additional revisions were made to reflect USM’s academic reorganization in 2012. The income from the fund shall be used to provide at least one annual scholarship award to a worthy full-time student in good class standing, enrolled in the School of Education and Human Development, or its successor administrative area.
The USM School of Music Endowed Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1996 by a gift from Edward R. Wollenberg. The income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to University of Southern Maine music students.
The Madelyn L. Ulmer ’31 Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1996 with a bequest from the estate of Madelyn L. Ulmer, Class of 1931. Income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to Maine residents.
The Vail Endowed Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2022 with a gift from Phyllis Klepper Vail ’76 and Rick Vail ’77.
Income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship support for students who graduated from high school in Androscoggin or Cumberland County and are in the final two years of their undergraduate education.
The Virginia Hodgkins Somers Foundation Endowed Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation in 2007 with a gift from the Virginia Hodgkins Somers Foundation. Income from the fund shall be used to provide financial assistance to eligible students in USM’s College of Education and Human Development.
The Ted and Betsy Weber Casco Bay Islands Scholarship was created at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2022 with gifts in memory of Ted and Betsy Weber, long-time residents of Great Diamond Island, Maine. Income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship support for students who are residents of any of these Casco Bay Islands: Peaks Island, Little Diamond Island, Great Diamond Island, Long Island, Chebeague Island or Cliff Island. Applicants must have demonstrated financial need. The award is renewable with a minimum GPA of 2.5, depending on available funds.
The WEX Endowed Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in June 2014 by combining two already existing endowed scholarships: USM Foundation’s “The Wright Express Scholarship for the School of Business” and USM’s “The Governor’s Computer Science Scholarship Fund.”
Income from the fund shall be used to provide financial support for undergraduate and graduate students majoring in mathematics, information technology, computer science, cybersecurity, technology management or statistics. This can also include students interested in teaching in any aforementioned areas. Awards will be made as two distinct scholarships as follows: Michael E. Dubyak Scholarship and WEX Endowed Scholarship.
The Dr. Jean Whitney Memorial Scholarship for Aspiring Educators was established at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2021 with gifts received by Jean’s family, friends, and USM colleagues through the University of Southern Maine Foundation. Dr. Jean Whitney served in multiple leadership roles throughout her 20-year tenure at USM. She was a professor of teacher education and special education, a director of educator preparation, and an associate dean. She loved teaching and research and was an inspiration to both her students and the junior faculty she mentored. This scholarship serves to honor Jean and her leadership and pay it forward to future educators.
Funds shall provide scholarship support for students aspiring to be teachers with demonstrated financial need. Preference should be given to students interested in teaching special education.
The Maurice & Doris Whitten ’41 Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2021 with a charitable gift annuity. Income from the fund shall be used for annual scholarships to needy students from the state of Maine. Preference shall be given to students who plan to enter the teaching profession.
The Maurice M. and Doris R. Whitten Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2021 with a bequest gift from Maurice Whitten. Income from the fund shall be used for scholarships for students who are citizens of the United States, with preference to be given to Maine residents.
The Jeanne Whynot-Vickers ’74, ’82G School of Education and Human Development Community Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2006 with donations from faculty, staff and friends. In 2021, the name of the endowment was changed from the “School of Education and Human Development Community Scholarship” to the “Jeanne Whynot-Vickers ’74, ’82G School of Education and Human Development Community Scholarship” to honor Jeanne’s many years of service and leadership as the Chair of the School of Education and Human Development (SEHD) External Advisory Council (EAC). Jeanne earned a teaching degree from Gorham State Teachers’ College in ’74 and an advanced degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Southern Maine in ’82, impacting thousands of lives in her career as an educator and school leader.
The Bertha Bridges Willis and Ralph “Rusty” Willis Scholarship was established in 1993 by family and friends in memory of “Rusty” Willis. The income from the fund shall be used to make an annual award to an entering USM freshman.
The Wipfli Accounting Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 2025 with gifts received by the University of Southern Maine Foundation.
The Fund shall be used to provide scholarship support in the amount of $2,500 each for two students per academic year enrolled in an Accounting major with a preference for Junior or Senior status.
The Linda Lachance Wolcott and Edward Wolcott Education Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation for the benefit of the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2022 with a gift from Linda Lachance Wolcott and Edward Wolcott. Income from the Fund shall be used to provide scholarship support graduate students in the School of Education programs. Preference for students with demonstrated financial need and Maine residents.
The Women’s Board of Maine Scholarship Fund was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1988. The fund shall be used to aid nursing students with a financial need.
The Esther E. Wood Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1995 and endowed in 1996 by the Gorham Class of 1954 to honor Ms. Esther Wood. The income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarships for USM students pursuing a major in History, who have achieved junior standing, and who have financial need.
The Robert L. Woodbury International Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1998 by Robert L. Woodbury, his friends and colleagues. The income from the fund shall be used to provide financial assistance to USM students who will be studying abroad.
The George D. Woodward Accounting Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine in 1995 by the Simmons Foundation. The fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to accounting students with preference given to residents of Cumberland County.
Elizabeth B. Woodwell ’75 Fund for Maine Students in the School of Business was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation in 2006 by the estate of Elizabeth B. Woodwell ’75. Income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance for students in the School of Business.
The Oliver H. Woshinsky Memorial Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine (USM) in 2019.
Oliver H. Woshinsky, Ph.D. was an esteemed Professor of Political Science at USM from 1971 until his retirement in 2001. During his 30 years of university teaching, he influenced positively the lives of countless USM students. Professor Woshinsky authored several books in his field including his 2008 Explaining Politics, which encapsulated what he viewed as his life’s mission: helping students understand the chaos of modern politics and preparing them to become informed and engaged citizens.
The fund shall be used to support students with financial need who are majoring in Political Science. They must be sophomores or juniors (2nd or 3rd year students) who have amassed 40-80 credit hours at the time of the award, with preference to students who reflect Professor Woshinsky’s diverse interests.
The Roberta and Joseph A. Zinni Music Scholarship was established at the University of Southern Maine Foundation in 2007 with gifts from Roberta A. Zinni. The income from the fund shall be used to fund a USM School of Music scholarship award.
