Dr. David Shane Lowry, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the Muskie School of Public Service, has published a major new work titled Lumbee Pipelines: American Indian Movement in the Residue of Settler Colonialism (University of Nebraska Press, 2025) which explores the historical and contemporary dynamics of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina and their strategies of identity, sovereignty and resilience.
On September 23, 2025, the University of Southern Maine hosted an author discussion and book-signing with Dr. Lowry where he spoke about Indigenous presence in academic and policy domains, the importance of visible Native contributions, and the work of his Indigenous Relationships Lab (IRL) at USM.
The Muskie School congratulates Dr, Lowry on this important contribution and encourages the Muskie community to explore his work.
