Nicholas DeAngelis ‘26, who recently earned a Master of Science in Athletic Training from the University of Southern Maine, helped lead District 1 to a national championship at the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Quiz Bowl on July 1 in Philadelphia.

Held during NATA’s 77th Clinical Symposia & AT Expo, the annual Jeopardy-style competition tests teams from each of the association’s 11 districts on the full scope of athletic training practice, including emergency care, examination and diagnosis, therapeutic interventions and evidence-based practice.

DeAngelis earned his spot on the District 1 roster after placing in the Eastern Athletic Trainers’ Association (EATA) Quiz Bowl in Boston in January, where the top-performing students advanced to represent the district at nationals.

Meredith Madden, assistant professor and chair of USM’s Athletic Training Education Program, said the win reflects both DeAngelis’ preparation and his standing as a representative of the program.

“We’re incredibly proud of Nick and everything he accomplished during his time in the Master of Science in Athletic Training program,” Madden said. “Nick represented the University of Southern Maine, our MSAT program, and athletic training as a whole with professionalism and enthusiasm. Nick’s character and effort is something we’re just as proud of as the win itself.”
