Dr. David Shane Lowry, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of
Southern Maine, has had a busy summer advancing Indigenous representation,
scholarship, and storytelling.
On August 19, 2026, Dr. Lowry co-hosted the 3rd Annual Native American and
American Indian Celebration at Fenway Park, held in conjunction with a Boston Red
Sox game. The event honored tribal nations throughout New England and featured an
on-field ceremony attended by chiefs of the Wabanaki Tribes. Highlights included a
ceremonial first pitch by tribal leaders, an honor song performed by a Wampanoag
elder, and recognition of tribal nations.
David Lowry also collaborated with Jessica Lockhart at WMPG, USM’s community radio
station, to produce an audiobook edition of his 2025 book, Lumbee Pipelines, published
by the University of Nebraska Press. Recorded over the summer in Lowry’s own voice,
the audiobook is now available on Audible.
In addition, Dr. Lowry continues to explore Indigenous identity, culture, and
contemporary experiences through his podcast, Returning the Land. A recent episode,
titled “Native Barbie,” features a conversation with his niece, Gabby.
These activities underscore Dr. Lowry’s ongoing commitment to bringing Indigenous
perspectives to broader audiences through public engagement, academic scholarship,
and storytelling.
