Students and faculty in the Muskie School of Public Service Geography-Anthropology program recently showcased innovative GIS and digital mapping research examining how Portland’s landscape has changed over time.
Led by faculty member Dr. Matthew Bampton, students collaborated with the Osher Map Library and Smith Center for Cartographic Education and community partners to layer historical maps with contemporary geographic data, exploring topics such as redlining, transportation networks, public spaces, and neighborhood change across Portland. The public exhibition highlighted the power of geospatial technologies and applied learning to connect history, geography, and community storytelling.
