Working for STEM Outreach
What does working a STEM Outreach camp look like? Our camps are day-long programs that run on university campuses, elementary/middle/high schools, and rec centers across the state of Maine. Our office is in Portland, but we are looking for staff in several locations such as Augusta, Bangor, Farmington, Machias, Camden, Houlton, and many more. Camps are week-long sessions that run Monday-Friday, 9:00am to 3:30pm. Our camp staff mentor groups of 12-16 campers aged 9-17 years old in a wide variety of STEM topics. These are including (but not limited to) LEGO robotics, programming, computer architecture, 3D printing & design, and electronics. Our campers get 35 contact hours with our mentors, which means campers gain a lot of experience and confidence in these topics.
STEM Outreach takes our staffing seriously. We aim to offer programs with highly qualified staff who will serve as mentors for the youth in our programs. Because it is sometimes difficult to find people who are simultaneously good with children, experienced teaching, and have a background in engineering and computer science, we often will do our best to match up team members that provide all of these skills as a team. STEM Outreach (formerly known as Maine Robotics) has been offering summer camps focused on Technology, Science, and Robotics since 2000. Over 7000 children have attended these camps over the last 20+ years and we anticipate over 700 campers for the 2024 summer. The University of Southern Maine is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate based on gender, race, age, religion, or sexual orientation. All employment at the USM STEM Outreach summer program is at-will employment.
