10 Dorm Essentials to Pack for Your First Year at USM

The countdown to move-in day is on! If you’re anything like me, getting ready for your first year of college might make you want to pack everything you own — just in case you need it. But when you’re moving into a dorm, it’s important to remember that space is limited. Instead of bringing everything from home, focus on packing the essentials to make your new room comfortable, organized, and ready for college life.

1.

Proper weather gear

In college, you spend a lot of time outside walking across campuses, so you’ll want to be prepared for the Northern New England weather. Make sure you bring a quality rain jacket, a warm winter coat, and reliable footwear. Once it starts getting colder, you’ll see students wearing different types of boots such as Blundstones; however, my personal favorite is the Doc Martens Fleece-Lined Chelsea Boot. It’s important to have shoes that will keep your feet warm and dry during the Maine winters.

2.

The right backpack

Your backpack is something you’ll use every single day. I personally prefer to have one that’s water-resistant and has a dedicated laptop compartment. Trust me, protecting your laptop from unexpected rain and snow is worth it. You’ll notice a lot of students carrying backpacks from The North Face, Patagonia, and L.L. Bean.

3.

Board and card games

One of the best ways to meet people during your first few weeks is through games. Whether it’s a quick round of UNO or a longer board game night, they are great icebreakers and help you to connect with your roommates and neighbors. They also come in handy during rainy nights and snow days when everyone is stuck inside.

4.

Noise-canceling headphones

No matter how lucky you get with the people in your dorm building, there will probably be times when someone decides to sing while you’re trying to study. Noise-canceling headphones can be a lifesaver when you need to focus.

5.

First aid kit and/or medicine box

Hopefully you’ll never need a first aid kit, but if you do, you’ll be glad you have one.. I recommend keeping Band-Aids, pain relievers, cold medicine, nausea medicine, and any personal medications and supplements within reach.

6.

Air purifier

I can’t officially say this is the reason, but I never caught the infamous freshman flu. Whether it was luck or the air purifier doing its job, I’ll never know.

7.

Essential oil diffuser

Most dorms don’t allow candles or candle warmers for safety reasons, so an essential oil diffuser is the perfect alternative to keep your space smelling fresh, and just the way you like it.

8.

Handheld vacuum

Do not underestimate just how messy a dorm room can get. Between dirt, hair, and the occasional spilled container of oatmeal (which may or may not have happened to me multiple times), a small handheld vacuum is incredibly useful.

9.

Electric kettle

An electric kettle is perfect for making tea, coffee, ramen, hot chocolate, mac and cheese cups, or instant oatmeal. It’s a simple item that you’ll probably use much more than you expect.

10.

Desk lamp

An unspoken rule in my freshman dorm room was that we never turned on the big light. A desk lamp provides the extra light that you need once the sun starts to set at 4 p.m.

At the end of the day, everyone’s dorm essentials look a little bit different, but these are the items that made the biggest difference for me. As move-in day gets closer, focus on bringing items that will keep you comfortable and organized.

Most importantly, remember that your dorm is your home for the next year, and the place where you’ll make some of your favorite memories. Good luck, and happy packing!
