Class of ’26: My Favorite Places to Go and Things to Do as a USM Student in Southern Maine

Life as a student at the University of Southern Maine is all about finding the perfect balance between busy, exciting days and slow, more meaningful moments. Now in my final semester, I’ve come to appreciate how much those everyday experiences add up. Whether it’s cheering on friends, exploring local food spots, or spending time by the ocean, there’s always something to do and someone to share it with. Here are some of my favorite ways to make the most of it all.

1.

Go to a game to cheer on the Huskies

Game days are always a highlight. I love going to men’s soccer and women’s basketball games at home, especially since I have so many friends on both teams. The energy in the crowd and the support of the athletes makes it such a fun environment.

2.

Coffee dates with friends

On slower days, coffee dates are my favorite. Sitting down with my best friends at Bard Coffee in Portland or Roots Cafe in Westbrook and just talking or studying for hours is something I’ll always appreciate.

Two students, including author, smile on a basketball court, one wearing a basketball net around her neck.
A group of students smile together at an ice cream shop, some holding ice cream.

3.

Sweet treat stops (worth it every time)

When we’re in the mood for something sweet, Beals in Gorham is a must — especially the  dairy-free mint chip ice cream. Their homemade ice cream is easily the best I’ve had. Also it’s so close to the Gorham campus that it is really fun to spontaneously go after a long day for a little night time sweat treat.

4.

Explore Portland’s food scene

The food scene around here is a huge part of the experience. Some of my favorite spots include Terlingua for barbecue, Yosaku for sushi, and Otto’s Pizza (especially their dairy-free options). I love trying all kinds of different and diverse food scenes that Portland has to offer. Each place has its own vibe, but they’re all go-to favorites. I also love Wednesday nights at the Eastern Promenade. The food trucks create a fun atmosphere with good food, ocean views, and a chance to just chill.

5.

Karaoke nights in the Old Port

Karaoke night at Foreplay, a bar in the Old Port, is one of the best ways to break up the week. Tuesdays turn into the best kind of chaos — friends hyping each other up, singing way too loudly, and laughing the entire night. It never gets old.

6.

Beach days in Scarborough

When the weather’s nice, Scarborough Beach is always the go-to. There’s no better feeling than laying in the sun, listening to music, and attempting to swim in the freezing Maine water. It’s simple, but it never disappoints.

7.

Winter activities

Living in Maine means you get to experience all four seasons. I really enjoy this aspect because I love to ski. I grew up skiing at the resorts in Maine and some of my favorite mountains aren’t too far from campus. It’s really fun to grab a friend and head to a mountain for the day or evening. Some places even have student discounts for super cheap!

8.

Bowling in Gorham

Closer to the Gorham campus, Junction Bowling is perfect for a laid-back night with friends. It’s just enough competition to keep things interesting, but mostly it’s about spending time together. Rally up a group of friends and enjoy a fun night filled with laughter, competition, and good music.

9.

Countless runs to Aroma Joe’s

There’s always a stop at Aroma Joe’s. Whether it’s with roommates or teammates, it’s basically part of the daily routine at this point. If you even need a mid day pick me up, this is the place to go. Also its so close to campus it’s impossible to drive past and not stop.

10.

Post-game tailgate parties

One of the most meaningful traditions happens after our home soccer games when we all come together for tailgates with our families. It’s such a fun and special way to celebrate —  and really captures what makes this community feel like home.

At the end of the day, it’s not just about the places — it’s the people you share them with. Life at USM and in Southern Maine is made up of these everyday moments that somehow turn into the memories you’ll never forget.
