The B.S. in Technology Management degree program prepares individuals to leverage technology as a leader in all industries. Students prepare to plan, direct, organize, and control operations. The program balances knowledge with the skills necessary to lead technical teams. Students may concentrate in many different science, technology, engineering and math focus areas depending on interest (e.g. management of information technology, management of precision manufacturing, management of a science lab). Hands-on application of theory learned in the classroom is an integral part of the program.

Upon completion of the Technology Management degree program at the University of Southern Maine the student will be able to:

  • Communications – A graduate will understand and effectively communicate verbally, in writing, and graphically.
  • Quantitative methods – A graduate will understand, use, and apply principles of mathematics at statistics, algebra, pre-calculus, and applied calculus levels.
  • Scientific principles and methods – A graduate will understand, use, and apply scientific methodology and analytic techniques related to their major and concentration.
  • Business and economics – A graduate will understand business and economic principles that apply to organizations in today’s global economy.
  • Management and supervision – A graduate will understand modern management and supervisory principles and practices, be able to effectively function in teams, and be an effective leader and manager.
  • Safety and health – A graduate will understand ethical, legal, and technical aspects of creating and maintaining a healthy and safe environment, including regulatory requirements.
  • Professional and personal development and responsibility – Graduates will have a strong educational foundation that prepares them to be a world-minded, intentional, life-long learner and practitioner; including a liberal arts foundation anchored in the humanities, arts, and sciences consistent with the educational mission and purpose of the University, their personal role and responsibilities as an individual, and will perform at an ethical professional level while completing their responsibilities.                
  • Technological principles and systems – A graduate will understand the technology and operation of technical systems related to their technical / occupational concentration.
  • Careers and best practices – A graduate will be able to identify careers and best practices in developing and/or delivering information on technological artifacts and processes and apply them in a context of their interrelationships, responsibilities, and demands as technology professionals.
  • Creativity – A graduate will be able to develop and explore methods for approaching a problem or a challenge in an imaginative and innovative way. Innovation is the application of better solutions that meet new requirements, unarticulated needs, or existing market needs. This is accomplished through more effective products, processes, services, technologies, or ideas.

Requirements

All students must meet University Core Curriculum requirements and additional departmental requirements. Specific requirements for B.S. degree programs offered through the Department of Technology are indicated below. A minimum of 15 credit hours or 5 courses must be taken in the Department of Technology.

Note: Students in the technology management degree program will be required to complete a senior assessment as part of the graduation requirement.

  • Moore Technology Award
    • Each spring, the Department of Technology faculty selects one student to be awarded the William H. Moore Award.   The student is chosen by faculty in a nomination and voting process.  This award is a gift of Mr. and Mrs. Hollis W. Moore, teachers in the Amherst, Massachusetts public school system.  It is named for their son, Dr. William H. Moore, who is a Professor Emeritus with the Department of Technology.   It is given annually to a senior, a Technology major, for excellence in the program.
  • Technology Management Scholarship
    • Technology Management major
    • Minimum 3.0 GPA
    • Enrolled in at least 6 credit hours per semester
    • Completed FAFSA
  • William & Laura Hooper Scholarship
    • This scholarship is for students in Technology majors. Students must be enrolled in at least half-time status (6 credit hours per semester) Minimum GPA of 3.0 Must have a completed FAFSA on file.
  • Michael E. Dubyak Scholarship
    • This scholarship was created at the University of Southern Maine in 2014 to provide financial support for students majoring in mathematics, information technology, computer science, cybersecurity, technology management, or statistics.
    • Eligible students must be a Maine resident who is majoring in mathematics, information technology, computer science, cybersecurity, technology management, or statistics. This can also include students interested in teaching in any aforementioned areas.
  • NiSourse Charitable Foundation Scholarship
    • Computer Science, Engineering, Environmental Science/Policy, or Technology major
    • Enrolled at least part-time
    • Completed 30 credit hours, 15 at USM
    • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • WEX Endowed Scholarship
    • This scholarship was created at the University of Southern Maine in 2014 to provide financial support for students majoring in mathematics, information technology, computer science, cybersecurity, technology management, or statistics.
    • Eligible students must be a Maine resident who is majoring in mathematics, information technology, computer science, cybersecurity, technology management, or statistics. This can also include students interested in teaching in any aforementioned areas.
  • DoT Outstanding Student Award
    • Each spring, the faculty of Technology selects one student to be selected as the Department of Technology – Outstanding Student of the Year.  The student is chosen by faculty in a nomination and voting process.  The criteria for the award include very high level of academic achievement, service to other students, and ethics of character beyond the classroom.

ATMAE CTM Exam Results 2024

The following contains analysis of the data obtained from the ATMAE Certified Technology Manager Exam administered to USM students. 

The examination consists of varying numbers of questions from over 10 categories shown in the report. A minimum score of 95 out of 160 is currently required to qualify for certification. The passing threshold represents over 100 accredited programs across the U.S. that use this exam to meet standards for numerous industry professions.
