Meet Jeremy Qualls, Professor of Physics and the new dean of the College of Science, Technology, and Health. He believes that it's the human connection in education that has a significant impact on the trajectory of a student. He plans to create a collaborative workspace to establish a culture of belonging and encourage mentoring relationships between faculty and students to build a stronger STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) workforce of tomorrow.
Out of the classroom and into the field! Last Fall, along with Assistant Professor of Biology Rachel Lasley-Rasher, students ventured to Kettle Cove in Cape Elizabeth to examine and measure invasive green crabs. According to Professor Lasley-Rasher, “There are so many organizations in Casco Bay that are doing interesting work in marine science and marine ecology. I really wanted my students to get out and collect data that matters.”
Robert Kraft bestowed the $25,000 grand prize of the Myra Kraft Community MVP Awards to Leavitt's Mill Free Health Center, founded by School of Nursing Assistant Professor Patricia Thompson Leavitt. The clinic, staffed by volunteers and USM nursing students, helps uninsured community members identify and treat a variety of chronic conditions.
Many USM faculty members are talented authors, including History professor, Libby Bischof; Nursing professor, Valerie Hart; Social Work and Sociology professor, David Wagner; Provost, Jeannine Diddle Uzzi; and English professors Shelton Waldrep and Justin Tussing.
