Dr. Yuqi Song, an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science, opens the “AI for Science Research Lab” at the Dubyak Center for Digital Science and Innovation on the University of Southern Maine’s Portland campus. Her research mainly focuses on machine learning, deep learning, and data mining and applying them in cross-disciplines, such as material informatics, tourism, and hospitality. Currently, the lab engages with a team comprising several motivated undergraduates and two master students.
Dr. Song also uses her research to detect cyberbullying and delves into integrating cutting-edge deep neural network models, including generative adversarial networks, graph neural networks, and transformer language models, with density functional theory (DFT) simulations. This innovative approach aims to generate crystal structures and predict their properties, showcasing the potential of interdisciplinary collaboration in advancing our understanding of materials. The outcomes of this work hold significant promise for real-world applications.
