The University of Southern Maine (USM) and Hearts of Pine announced today a new partnership naming USM the professional soccer club’s exclusive education partner.
As a longstanding public institution with deep roots in Maine, the University is proud to partner with an organization that shares the same values and has quickly built a vibrant community and culture across the state and broader U.S. soccer landscape.
The multi-year partnership will create new opportunities for students while increasing USM’s visibility across Southern Maine and beyond.
“We’re thrilled to partner with an organization that has captured the attention and hearts of Mainers,” said USM President Jacqueline Edmondson. “Hearts of Pine shares our commitment to community and connection, and we look forward to the many ways this partnership will inspire our students, expand opportunities, and help introduce USM to new audiences.”

With less than a half mile between USM’s Portland campus and Fitzpatrick stadium, home to the Hearts of Pine, the organizations are already neighbors.
“As we continue building something special for this community, partnering with an organization that has such a strong legacy is incredibly meaningful,” shared Hearts of Pine Founder and Chief Community Officer Gabe Hoffman-Johnson. “USM has been creating opportunities and opening doors for decades, and we’re excited to work together to expand that impact.”
The partnership is made possible through the support of a generous anonymous donor who is passionate about USM and the Promise Scholars program — a signature initiative that helps underserved young achievers across Maine become successful university students through scholarship, mentorship, and wraparound support.
Additional details will be shared as the partnership officially kicks off with the fall 2026 semester.
