In June 2021 Governor Mills signed LD 1189, which removes the Praxis requirement from the Maine certification rules. Accordingly, students enrolled in initial educator preparation programs at USM will no longer be required to complete Praxis Core and/or Subject Assessments to earn certification. School Psychology, School Counseling, and Literacy Specialists students must continue to take their exam.

While Maine has removed the Praxis requirement, be advised that many other states continue to require teacher tests as part of the certification process. A number of these states accept Praxis as an equivalent assessment of subject matter knowledge.
