The Origins of Totalitarianism: Hannah Arendt in Context
This course will run as an asynchronous, online course in the Winter Term (2022). The Winter Term is a condensed term of four weeks. The course will investigate the development of what Hannah Arendt calls "totalitarian" states in her famous postwar study The Origins of Totalitarianism. The course will be divided into three sections, following the outline of Arendt's book: anti-semitism, imperialism, and totalitarianism. Students will read selections of Origins of Totalitarianism in conjunction with lectures, films, and articles that frame and develop key issues Arendt discusses in the text. Students will be encouraged to think about the breakdown of democratic society, the relationship between capitalism and political extremism, the development of propaganda, the relationship between state and social elites, the role of global and regional economic forces in mass political mobilization, and the turn, both within and beyond the nation-state, to violence as the primary tool of political power.
