The Biology Department has established arrangements with local universities and organizations to provide unique opportunities for USM students. 

Sea Change Semester at Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences

USM students can spend a semester at the Bigelow Lab in Boothbay, just 90 minutes from Portland, transferring courses toward their Biology degree.


University of New England School of Pharmacy

University of New England’s School of Pharmacy has two pathways available to USM students.

 “BS + 4” pathway

USM students complete the B.S. Biology, Human Biology concentration within the Department of Biology.

Students must declare their intent to apply to the UNE School of Pharmacy by 1 May of the year preceding the application year. Typically, students would be at the end of their third year at USM.

GPA requirements: 3.2 in all prerequisite courses and 3.3 in all math and science courses

UNE reserves 3 seats for qualified USM students in this pathway. If more than 3 qualified students apply for a particular cohort, then students may compete within the general pool of candidates.

“2+4” pathway

USM students complete a set of prerequisite courses and apply to the general pool of candidates.

4+1 program in Biotechnology with the Roux Institute 

USM and the Roux Institute at Northeastern University have an agreement where USM students can earn a B.S. in Biology with a concentration in biotechnology and then complete a M.S. in Biotechnology in a total of 5 years. For more information about this program, contact Meghan Cadwallader


Maine Track Program, Tufts University School of Medicine

Maine Medical Center and Tufts University School of Medicine offer a competitive program for Maine-based students to pursue medical school at Tufts and complete clinical work at sites throughout Maine. More information is available at the program’s website
