Angela Atkinson Duina is Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership and Co-Director of the Southern Maine Partnership. Angela’s research interests include: change engagement in schools and school systems; diverse approaches to leadership; strategies for developing school communities with high collective efficacy; improvement science; dissemination and application of research findings among practitioners; and cross-sector, community impact initiatives.
Before joining the faculty at USM, she worked in Boston, Western Maine, Vancouver, Canada and (the original) Portland. She has worked in urban and rural PK-12 settings in a variety of capacities: teacher (ESL, Spanish, Language Arts, Science), middle school vice principal, summer program director, and high school dean of faculty. At the district level, in Portland, she served as school improvement coordinator for elementary and middle schools with high percentages of students from low-income families and was also director of research, assessment and data initiatives. She was a 2017 John T. Gorman Fellow, focused on making measurable improvements in the lives of homeless youth through her work.
Angela received her doctorate in educational leadership and development from Boston University, where she was a recipient of a Glenn Fellowship Award. She focused her studies on education policy and program management and evaluation. Her research highlighted changes in leadership and collective efficacy in select rural high schools in Maine during implementation of the School Improvement Grants under Title I.
For fun, Angela hangs out with her family and friends at home and in different parts of the world. She used to read recipes and cook elaborate meals, now she views mealtimes essentially as live rounds of “Chopped.” She also likes walks in the woods with the dog, flat skiing and road trips. She aims to live in a world where all children and families have their basic needs met and where everyone has the opportunity to advance and enrich their lives through education.
