The Admissions Pathway Program (APP) is an academic support program offered through the University of Southern Maine’s English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Department. This program is designed to support non-native English speakers’ and multilingual students’ transition to the rigor of academic reading and writing in college-level courses.
Students in the APP program are multilingual writers who have met USM’s admission requirements, but have been designated by the Admissions Office as students who will require additional support for success in academic reading and writing.
All APP students meet with an academic advisor to select courses and create an individualized pathway that promotes students’ academic success and prepares them for the requirements of their preferred majors. During their first semester or first year at USM, students in the APP program have a full-time course load, in which they take both APP writing courses and regular, required CORE classes. Once students have achieved university-level proficiency in academic reading and writing by completing the program requirements, they will work with their advisor to officially declare their choice of major.
