I have been accepted to APP, what should I do next?
Congratulations on your admission to the University of Southern Maine!
As a newly accepted student in the Admissions Pathway Program, there are a few steps you must complete before you enroll for your first semester at USM.
- Activate your USM email/portal account (USM offices will send all important communications to your USM email address).
- Submit your required enrollment deposit (to show your intention to attend USM).
- Check your USM email daily. There you will receive information about new student orientation activities, including a required online informational module. More information about orientation can be found on the USM orientation page.
- Complete your online orientation module and attached quiz. As the final step, you will be invited to schedule your initial course registration and advising (ACS) appointment.
- Before your scheduled advising appointment, APP students must take an academic language assessment to determine which courses they will register for. Click here for more information about the ESOL Placement Test
- NOTE: International and out-of-state students will be scheduled for the assessment after arrival at USM. Please contact our office to arrange this: USMESOL@maine.edu.
- If you have questions or need assistance, please consider contacting the APP program director, Andrea Vasquez (andrea.vasquez@maine.edu). She is happy to assist with next steps. Lorem Ipsum
Can I participate in the APP program courses if I was admitted directly to a different major? What if I am not a USM degree student?
- YES: any non-APP multilingual student may participate in our support coursework at any time while at USM. Students should contact our office to schedule a language assessment and their academic advisor to discuss scheduling.
- Local (non-USM-enrolled) residents may also participate in our coursework. Please email us to schedule a language assessment to determine placement and course options. To learn more about course options for community members, please consult our information page.
- Students can sign up for a placement test here.
Am I eligible to receive financial aid?
Yes, you may be!
- APP students who are U.S citizens or permanent residents are eligible to apply for federal financial aid (FAFSA).
- This can be applied toward all credit-bearing USM courses, including those in our program.
- Admitted students who do not have citizenship or resident status should consult with the USM financial aid office for more information regarding possible funding opportunities.
Will I receive college credit for ESOL Courses?
- All advanced-level APP courses offer 3.0 academic credits. Any intermediate level coursework, however, is considered developmental-level and does not grant college credit toward graduation.
How long does the Admissions Pathway Program take to complete?
- All required support coursework for Admissions Pathway Program students will be completed within the first 2-3 semesters of study.
