If you are a New Mainer or someone living in the Greater Portland area and are interested in taking ESOL classes at USM, here are the steps to apply:

  1. First, please read our Frequently Asked Questions page to learn more about our program.
  2. Please make an appointment to meet with an ESOL Department staff member, by emailing usmesol@maine.edu or calling 207-780-4365 to schedule an appointment. The appointment will last about 30 minutes and allows us a chance to discuss the courses available and for you to ask any questions you may have.
  3. Next, you will want to sign-up for a free Placement Test. For more information about our Placement Test please check out the Placement Test Information Page.
  4. Finally, an ESOL Department staff member will contact you regarding your Placement Test results and recommendations on the courses that suit you best.
