The Access Services Department facilitates user access to local and remotely held resources through the circulation of materials, borrowing policies, renewing books, requesting books, Course Reserves, Interlibrary Loan (ILL), shelving and shelf maintenance, document delivery, group study rooms, library-wide lost and found, and patron registration.

As part of the University Libraries, it collects and preserves rare materials, including books, manuscripts, photographs, and artifacts. The Department is made up of three meta-collections: General Rare Books and Manuscripts, the University Archives, and the Jean Byers Sampson Center for Diversity in Maine.
USM’s Franco-American Collection preserves and promotes the culture and heritage of Maine’s Franco-American population.
Digital Projects offers digitization services for the University of Southern Maine. USM Libraries has partnered with the Osher Map Library and Smith Center for Cartographic Education to offer project planning and digital imaging for materials related to the dissemination of University research and preservation of institutional memory.

The USM Maker Innovation Studio (MIST Lab) is the innovation and prototyping arm of the Michael E. Dubyak Center for Digital Science and Innovation. Located on the fifth floor of the Science building on Portland campus, MIST currently houses an Experiential Learning Classroom, makerspace, the Digital Immersion Lab, the Digital Media Lab, an advanced digital fabrication and prototyping lab, and the APIS Commercial entity.
The Center for Technology Enhanced Learning (CTEL)’s Learning Designers support faculty to create engaging programs, courses and lesson plans grounded in evidence-based best practices for every modality. CTEL can help faculty reach their pedagogical goals and support their commitment to excellence.

The spaces, services, and resources of The Learning Commons are designed to foster collaborative and active learning. Located in the USM Libraries, The Learning Commons is also home to USM’s peer academic support services. In addition to subject-based tutoring, we offer academic coaching, technology assistance, and research guidance, as well as reservable group study spaces and community computers.
