For decades the University of Southern Maine (USM) School of Nursing has been recognized as a leader in the education of health care professionals. In an ever-changing and complex landscape, our programs respond to the needs of the citizens of Maine and the global community.
Undergraduate Program
The undergraduate nursing program curriculum is guided by theory from nursing science, the liberal arts, physical sciences, and social sciences. With a broad educational foundation, nursing students develop an understanding of how systems affect the health and well-being of communities, families, and individuals across the lifespan.
Graduate Programs
Our graduate nursing programs advance the practice of nursing by ensuring that every student acquires the ability to analyze, synthesize, and utilize knowledge. Graduate students engage in scholarly inquiry through interprofessional collaboration, using research, quality improvement methods, and contemporary technology. Please note that admission for our AGANCP program is currently on hold.
The Master of Science (MS) programs offer a vibrant, challenging course of study that prepares graduates for practice in diverse health care settings.
The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program is designed for experts in specialized advanced nursing practice. Coursework focuses on innovative and evidenced-based practice, reflecting the application of research findings.
Our Faculty
Our faculty members are committed to advancing excellence in nursing. Representing a broad range of specialty areas, our faculty are board members of state and national nursing associations, and they are frequently published in leading nursing journals. Along with facilitating progress toward national health goals and initiatives, our faculty are active in research and policy issues at the state and national level.
Beyond the Classroom
Our campus locations in the major metropolitan areas of Southern Maine offer students access to clinical experience in renowned health care facilities and community-based health care organizations. Many students take advantage of the opportunity to travel abroad on international health care missions.

Approval and Accreditation
Our pre-licensure programs are approved by the Maine State Board of Nursing. The baccalaureate degree in nursing program and master’s degree in nursing program at the University of Southern Maine are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), 655 K St NW, Washington, DC, 20001 (202) 887-6791.
