Expected career outcomes
Turn compassion into action
Whether you want to work directly with clients or help future counselors, our program provides an excellent foundation for learning the multiple layers of influence – individual, social, and cultural – that shape human behavior. You’ll be prepared for a variety of positions, as well as the pursuit of graduate study.
Gain hands-on experience
Bolster your resume and gain skills beyond the classroom through an internship in a counseling or clinical setting. You’ll establish connections and gain the hands-on experience needed to market yourself effectively to future employers.
Pursue certification
Students who have an interest in adult mental health will be eligible for the Mental Health Rehabilitation Technician/Community (MHRT/C) certification, a valuable state-level credential issued through our Muskie School of Public Service.
Program requirements
Students gain foundational knowledge and familiarity with the roots of personality, gender and culture issues, approaches to diagnosis, factors that impact access, and psychotherapy techniques. You’ll learn to work with different populations through a curriculum that emphasizes diversity and inclusion.
Flexible programming
Tailor your studies to align with your academic interests and career goals by choosing an adult focus, a child-youth focus, or a combination of both.
