Class of ’26: A Love Letter to USM

It’s hard to put into words what these past four years have meant to me, because the University of Southern Maine is so much more than just the place I went to school.

Being a student-athlete shaped me in ways I never could have imagined. There were incredible highs — the wins, the moments of pride, the feeling of being part of something bigger than myself. But there were also lows — challenges, setbacks, and moments that tested me mentally and physically. Every single one of those experiences mattered. They built resilience, character, and perspective.

Serving as a captain was one of the greatest honors of my life. It taught me what it means to lead, to support others, and to put the team before myself. My teammates weren’t just people I played with — they became my family. They pushed me, believed in me, and stood by me through everything.

Bridgette Toland, wearing a USM Huskies navy jersey with the number 4, jogs on a soccer field during a nighttime game, smiling broadly.

Even beyond athletics, it’s the people who made this place unforgettable. The friendships I’ve built here are the kind you carry with you for a lifetime. I love these people so much, and I’m endlessly grateful for every laugh, late night, and shared moment that turned into a memory I’ll never forget.

Choosing to come to school in Maine was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. There’s something special about this community — something genuine, supportive, and deeply connected. It’s unlike anything I’ve experienced before, and it’s something I’ll carry with me wherever I go.

If there’s one thing I hope to leave behind, it’s this: success isn’t just measured in stats, awards, or recognition, but in the people you lift along the way. It’s about how you show up for others, how you make people feel, and the impact you make when no one is watching. If I’ve done that, even in the smallest way, then I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished here.

As I look ahead, I don’t have everything figured out — and I’m okay with that. My goal is to move to Boston and work with a professional sports team in their content creation department. It’s a big dream, but I’m going to chase it. These past four years have shown me that growth happens when you step into the unknown, and I’m ready for whatever comes next.

I’m proud of the person I’ve become during my time at USM. I’ve grown in ways I never expected, and I truly feel like I’ve left a positive mark on this community. More importantly, this place has left a permanent mark on me. USM has prepared me to step into this next chapter of life, and for that, I’m forever grateful.

To the incoming students: take it all in. Say yes to new opportunities. Don’t be afraid to fail, because those moments will teach you the most. Find your people, be yourself, and trust the process — you’re exactly where you’re meant to be.

To the graduating seniors: you made it. Be proud of yourself. And as you step into the next chapter, don’t let anyone tell you where to go, who to be, or what to do. Create your own path. Follow your dreams, trust your gut, and build a life that feels true to you.

Thank you for everything, USM.
