On-campus employment is a great way for students to earn a paycheck without compromising academic, extracurricular, or personal commitments. Parents/guardians and family members can help students find and prepare for on-campus employment.

On-campus student employment at USM

On-campus employment has many benefits: Not only is it a great way for your student to incorporate real-life experiences into the classroom, develop important professional skills, and network with staff & faculty, but it is also an opportunity to earn income and get involved. On-campus student employment offers convenience & flexibility around your student’s busy academic, extracurricular and personal schedules. Research shows that students who work on campus often have higher academic success rates, deeper connections on campus, and are more likely to graduate.

Ensure your student brings required documents to campus

Student jobs at USM are real jobs, just like any other. If offered a job, students will need to complete the Form I-9 within the first three (3) days of employment.

Please help your students come prepared by ensuring they have the appropriate documents needed to complete their I-9 paperwork. Student employees must visit the Campus Student Employment Office in person with valid, unexpired, original copies of their documents to be verified. We cannot accept photos or copies. Click here for a complete list of acceptable documents.

Federal work-study program

Federal Work-Study (FWS) enables eligible students to apply for part-time employment opportunities on campus. Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be considered for FWS. To inquire about FWS eligibility, please contact Student Financial Services.

Please note: A FWS offer alone does not guarantee your student an on-campus job. Your student will still need to apply and interview for the position. The Campus Student Employment Office does its very best to assist all FWS-eligible students in finding an on-campus position.

If your student does not qualify for FWS, they may apply for department- or university-funded positions on campus, though these opportunities are more limited and competitive.

Explore on-campus job opportunities

Encourage your student to start thinking about job opportunities on campus and the right balance for their academics. Students can browse current opportunities on the USM Job & Internship Board (which they can access via the MyUSM portal). Students work around 5-10 hours per week. On-campus supervisors are flexible and accommodating to student schedules, understanding that academics are their top priority.
