Any J-1 Exchange Visitor (Professor, Research Scholar or Short Term Scholar) must document that they have sufficient funding to cover their expenses during their stay in the US.
- The J-1 Exchange Visitor must provide proof of liquid funds in the amount of $2,500 per month for the duration of their stay
- If the J-1 will be accompanied by dependent(s) (spouse or unmarried child under the age of 21) the Exchange Visitor must also provide proof of liquid funds in the amount of $1000 per month for the first dependent and $800 per month for each additional dependent.
In some instances Exchange Visitors may be paid by the sponsoring department. Documentation might include a letter from the visitors home employer guaranteeing income, a personal bank letter or bank statement, a grant/award, etc.
