We offer a variety of study abroad opportunities ranging from short-term travel programs to semester or year-long terms abroad.

For more information about our short-term faculty-led travel courses, please visit: Travel courses (faculty-led)

With our reciprocal programs, USM students have the opportunity spend a semester abroad at one of our exchange universities, and students from these universities come to spend a semester at USM. Because of this, the tuition for these programs is locked at the standard USM in-state tuition rate.

Reciprocal slots for the Fall of 2024 and Spring of 2025 will be competitive and limited so we suggest you list your first choice school and a back up on your application form. We cannot guarantee that you will be able to obtain a placement at a reciprocal school. We encourage you to look through the “Partner School” options as well.

The following programs are not accepting Reciprocal Placement for 2024/25.

  • University of Winchester, England
  • University of Aberdeen, Scotland
  • Sogang University, South Korea (spaces are available in their summer program)

All other reciprocal slots are extremely limited for 2024/25. However, most schools will accept fee paying students. Contact the International Office for a “fee paying budget” and information on possible scholarships.

USM is also part of the University of the Arctic consortium, a network of universities in Norway, Iceland, Sweden, Denmark, Canada, Finland, and more. There may be additional reciprocal opportunities available through this network, including scholarships. For more information, visit north2north program.

Partnership schools allow USM students to pay a discounted rate on tuition, which is determine by the school abroad. While there is not a reciprocal exchange occurring, this rate is often quite discounted than other institutions in the area.

There are also many great programs, in a wide variety of countries and academic disciplines, offered by our approved study abroad providers. Some programs are more affordable than others, and our study abroad advisors can help you in navigating the various options.

It is possible to connect with other partnerships with the University of Maine System, should you see one of interest.
