We offer a variety of study abroad opportunities ranging from short-term travel programs to semester or year-long terms abroad.

With our reciprocal programs, USM students have the opportunity spend a semester abroad at one of our exchange universities, and students from these universities come to spend a semester at USM. Because of this, the tuition for these programs is locked at the standard USM in-state tuition rate.
Some reciprocal exchanges are closed for the Spring 2024 semester but many will re-open in the Fall of 2024. At this time the following sites are closed: Winchester, Leicester, UiT, Aberdeen and Rabdoud.
Winchester and Leicester have agreed to accept fee paying students for the Spring 2024 semester which means you would pay them directly. You will find budgets for these two options on the “program application” page. While you would be able to use your financial aid, if you have a USM Merit Scholarship (Presidential/Dirigo, etc.) it could not be applied as those can only be used for reciprocal exchanges.

USM is also part of the University of the Arctic consortium, a network of universities in Norway, Iceland, Sweden, Denmark, Canada, Finland, and more. There may be additional reciprocal opportunities available through this network, including scholarships. For more information, visit north2north program.
Partnership schools allow USM students to pay a discounted rate on tuition, which is determine by the school abroad. While there is not a reciprocal exchange occurring, this rate is often quite discounted than other institutions in the area.
There are also many great programs, in a wide variety of countries and academic disciplines, offered by our approved study abroad providers. Some programs are more affordable than others, and our study abroad advisors can help you in navigating the various options.
