The UMS Global Competency Micro-Credential pathway is designed to help you gain the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience that are critical to full participation in a global society and competitiveness in the global economy. Through participation in different activities, events, training(s) and experiential learning opportunities, you will increase your awareness of global issues and cultural diversity; enhance your understanding and appreciation of other cultures and perspectives on global issues, and how your actions can affect both your local and global communities; and gain intercultural fluency, resilience and adaptability through shared experiences that permit you to participate in international dialogues on the world’s most pressing and enduring issues collaboratively and equitably.

Here is an overview of the options for information sessions, activities, and presentations for each of the badge levels.

Activity to Enhance Global Awareness:

  • Attend event sponsored by a club or organization that promotes greater Global Awareness (e.g., MCC, ANT, FRE, SPA, JPN, DIAT)
  • Attend event sponsored by International/Global Education Office (e.g., International Education Week, Lunar New Year, Study Abroad presentations)
  • Attend other approved activities or events that promote Global Awareness (e.g., performance by an international artist or a play about an international or global issue)

Information Session about Global Issues and/or Opportunities in Global Education:

  • Meet with International/Global Education staff to discuss Global Experience opportunities at USM
  • Meet with faculty to discuss Global Studies/International Affairs courses, academic programs and/or career opportunities
  • Attend an Information Session about Study Abroad/Global Experiences held by International/Global Education staff
  • Attend a Study Abroad/Global Experiences Fair
  • Attend a Travel Course Information Session led by UMS faculty

Training Activity that Enhances Understanding of Other Cultures and/or Perspectives on Global issues:

  • Enrollment in a global learning or cross-cultural course
  • Organize a co-curricular activity or event that enhances the learner’s understanding of Global Perspectives
  • Attend a conference related to another culture, global issue or world affairs (e.g., Camden Conference, Anthropology Conference)
  • Conduct research about another culture, global issue or world affairs

Presentation on Global Perspectives:

  • Post information about the Global Perspectives project on a website and/or social media
  • Speak at an event that promotes the understanding of Global Perspectives
  • Make a public presentation on a conference attended or research conducted on another culture, global issues or world affairs
  • Submit a paper about research conducted on another culture, global issues or world affairs
  • Write an article for a college or local newspaper about an event, conference or research topic that promotes the understanding of Global Perspectives
    • Note: Documentation of your presentation, performance or creative expression, submitted as evidence of your Global Perspectives training, will be in the public domain.

Experiential Learning Activity:

  • Participate in a Virtual Global Experience course
  • Participate in Travel Course
  • Participate in a Semester/Summer Abroad (including some NSE programs, e.g., Canada and Puerto Rico)
  • Participate in an International Internship
  • Conduct research abroad or in a global context
  • Participate in a Service Learning project or as a Volunteer in an approved Global Context

Presentation on Global Experience:

  • Post information about the Global Experience on a website and/or social media
  • Speak at a conference, forum, event or to an organization about the Global Experience (e.g., academic conference, Study Abroad presentation, Fair presenter)
  • Submit an essay or paper about the Global Experience (e.g., VGE reflection, capstone thesis)
  • Write an article for a college or local newspaper about the Global Experience
    • Note: Documentation of your presentation, performance or creative expression, submitted as evidence of your Global Perspectives training, will be in the public domain.

The Global Competency Micro-Credential is awarded after successful completion of all three of the Level Badges.
