Prior Learning Assessment Credits and the USM Residency Policy

USM expects that students complete at least 30 of their last 45 credits at USM in order to meet the residency requirement. The following outlines how PLA credits impact students’ residency requirement at USM.

PLA CREDITS THAT DO NOT COUNT TOWARDS THE RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT:

  • Advanced Placement (AP)
  • International Baccalaureate (IB)
  • CLEP Exam
  • DSST Exam
  • UExcel Exam
  • BYU FLATS Language Exam
  • NYU Language Exam
  • ACTFL OPI Language Exam
  • External Training/Credential Review

 PLA CREDITS THAT DO COUNT TOWARDS THE RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT:

  • Challenge Exams
    • Challenge exams must meet the following criteria in order for the credits earned to count toward residency:
      • Students completing the exams must be matriculated
      • Exams must be created by and evaluated by USM faculty
  • Academic Portfolios
    • Academic portfolios must meet the following criteria in order for the credits earned to count toward residency:
      • Students must be matriculated
      • Students must complete the online portfolio development course 
      • Portfolios must be evaluated by USM faculty and/or the PLA director

Please note: PLA credits earned from other University of Maine System institutions do not count toward the residency requirement at USM.
