As requested by Gov. Mills, the University of Maine System will ensure the cost of college is not a barrier for those directly impacted by the tragedy by providing free tuition and establishing a fund to support other postsecondary educational expenses.
People touched by the recent mass shooting in Lewiston came together for a vigil at USM’s LAC Campus to express their grief and resilience.
“Over the past few days we learned that we lost friends and family directly connected to our university,” President Jacqueline Edmondson said. “Our community mourns with everyone who is impacted. And I wish to personally extend my sincere condolences to all of you.”
The hour-long event began with a procession of faculty and administrators in Hannaford Hall on the Portland Campus, included remarks from several colleagues and culminated with a presidential address. It was followed by a short speech from award-winning actor and USM alumnus Tony Shalhoub ‘77.
