If you will be joining us at the University of Southern Maine as an undergraduate exchange student for one semester or a full academic year you will need to complete our exchange student application process. Please find the steps outlined below along with any necessary forms.

  • Complete the International Exchange Student Application
  • Write a brief essay (300-500 words) explaining why you would like to study at the University of Southern Maine.
  • Obtain a brief statement from your study abroad office supporting your period of study abroad at USM
  • Provide proof of English Proficiency if your coursework abroad is not taught in English.

    Acceptable methods to document English proficiency include:
    TOEFL
    IELTS
    J-Check
    In some instances an English Proficiency Report will be allowed
  • Document sufficient funding to cover the expenses related to your exchange in the US (See cost chart below)
  • Submit an academic transcript showing the courses you have taken at your home University/College
  • Provide a copy of the biographical page of your passport.
  • Select your desired courses. Complete a Registration Worksheet. Be sure to have your courses approved by your home school and then email the Registration Worksheet to Kaoru Phillips

Fall 2024 Semester Details

  • Fall term begins on Tuesday, September 3rd
  • Monday, September 2nd is Labor Day (a national holiday) so the campus will be closed
  • Classes end on Friday, December 13th
  • Final Exams run from December 14th through the 20th
  • Students should plan to arrive on the late afternoon/early evening of Wednesday, August 28th or Thursday, August 29th (additional details regarding arrival will be provided shortly)

Spring 2025 Semester Details

  • Spring term begins on Tuesday, January 21st
  • President’s Day (No Classes) February 17th
  • Spring Break: March 17 – March 23rd
  • Last day of classes: May 2nd
  • Final Exams May 3 – 9th
