Journey through the Civil War and Reconstruction (HTY 394)

Offered by Professors Ashley Towle and Adam Schmitt this course is expected to include travel to: Gettysburg, PA; Washington DC; Richmond, VA and Harper’s Ferry WV.

In this course students will be able to 

  • identify and describe the significance of important events, individuals, and ideas from the Civil War and Reconstruction era
  • analyze different narratives of the Civil War and Reconstruction and their impact on understanding the time period
  • explain how the historical memory of the Civil War has been shaped and used by different groups of people for their own agendas
  •  interpret historical landscapes and explain how they are products of historical memory.

Tourism in Tuscany (TAH 307)

Earn 3 USM credits in Tourism & Hospitality (TAH 307) while spending 9 days in Tuscany over Spring Break 2026 immersed in the culinary, cultural, and wellness activities that contribute to Italy’s global reputation as the epicenter of slow food and slow tourism.

Tuition and Fees

The program fee for this course is $4,648 and students will pay AAA Travel directly for this, details outlined on their website here. Tuition and fees at are in addition to the program fee, and participants will pay their normal rate for 3 credits of tuition and fees through MaineStreet.

The program fee includes: double accommodation, airfare, in country ground transportation, academic site visits and entrance fees


Scholarships

Limited scholarships are available to USM matriculated degree candidates to help fund your participation in a USM faculty led short term travel program. Each scholarship requires the completion of an application which can be found below. Students should review the criteria for the scholarship to determine if they are eligible before applying. Scholarship amounts range from $200-$500.
