International students and scholars at USM are required to have health and accident insurance coverage for themselves and their dependents living in the United States. The University of Maine system has implemented a mandatory insurance plan for all international students, and the charge will automatically be added to your student account.  Students are not required to purchase the USM/Univ. of Maine System health insurance plan.  Students who wish to purchase their own policy must be sure their plan has the following levels of coverage and they must obtain a waiver from the USM plan.

  • Basic Benefit of $100,000 per accident or illness
    • IMPORTANT: Coverage cannot be for emergencies only. Coverage must include regular doctors visits, or a check-up when you feel sick, etc.
    • There cannot be a dollar value cap on the amount of coverage you can use. The annual maximum must be unlimited
  • Medical Evacuation of $50,000
  • Repatriation payable up to $ 25,000 for preparation and transportation to home country
  • A deductible of no more than $500 per year
  • If you are a competitive athlete please confirm that your insurance will cover injuries sustained during practices/games, etc.

Enroll in the USM Health Insurance Plan

The USM insurance plan for international students is offered by United Health Care and the cost for the Spring 2024 semester (January 1 through July 31, 2024) is $1,641.00. To enroll:

  1. Go to Gallagher Student Health Insurance for UMaine System
  2. Log in (if you haven’t already) by following the instructions on the website.
  3. Click the green ‘Enroll’ button under the ‘Plan Summary’ tile.
  4. Follow the instructions to complete the form.
  5. Save a copy of your reference number.    

Waive the USM Health Insurance Plan

If you have purchased alternate coverage that meets the requirements mentioned above you will need to waive the USM coverage. You must do this before January 31, 2024, or you will have to pay for the cost of the USM plan. To waive:

  1. Go to www.gallagherstudent.com/UMS
  2. Log in (if you haven’t already) by following the instructions on the website.
  3. Click the yellow ‘Waive’ button under the ‘Plan Summary’ tile.
  4. Follow the instructions to complete the form.
  5. Save a copy of your reference number. This number only confirms the submission, not approval of your form.
