Engineering Student Committee (ESC)
The ESC is an umbrella student organization lead by the engineering students for the engineering students. The committee meets at least once per month to relay important information impacting our students as well as organize events around campus and the community. All engineering students are automatically members of the committee, are encouraged to attend meetings, and may benefit from the organization.
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)
IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional society. It is designed to serve professionals involved in all aspects of the electrical, electronic, and computing fields and related areas of science and technology that underlie modern civilization. IEEE dedicated to advancing innovation and technological excellence for the benefit of humanity.
Our engineering students have a long history of presenting at and attending regional and national conferences. There are an estimated 2,000 such conferences held each year globally by IEEE which our students can take advantage of. If you are interested learning more about USM’s IEEE student chapter or becoming a member, please contact Dr. Maxworth.
American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)
ASME is an American professional association that, in its own words, “promotes the art, science, and practice of multidisciplinary engineering and allied sciences around the globe” via “continuing education, training and professional development, codes and standards, research, conferences and publications, government relations, and other forms of outreach.”
ASME is a not-for-profit membership organization that enables collaboration, knowledge sharing, career enrichment, and skills development across all engineering disciplines, toward a goal of helping the global engineering community develop solutions to benefit lives and livelihoods. Founded in 1880 by a small group of leading industrialists, ASME has grown through the decades to include more than 100,000 members in 140+ countries. Thirty-two thousand of these members are students.
Since Fall of 2021, the University of Southern Maine ASME student chapter has been leading the development of the Coaster Car to compete regionally in coaster derbies. These specialized derby cars can reach top speeds of 60 mph using only gravity for propulsion. We expect to begin racing in 2023. For more information please contact Dr. Eaton.
Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering (SAMPE)
The Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering (SAMPE) is a global professional member society dedicated to enabling growth and innovation in the aerospace, transportation, construction, energy, marine and industrial application industries. As the only technical society encompassing all fields of endeavor in materials and processes, SAMPE provides a unique forum for scientists, engineers, and academicians. They unite academia, research institutes, government labs and industry, providing a comprehensive and diverse membership for advanced materials engineering.
The SAMPE student group competes annually in the SAMPE bridge contest which allows students to design, build, and test a miniature structural bridge using various composite materials in accordance with a set of well defined rules. In 2022, the University of Southern Maine team achieved the highest beam loading of all participating schools. For more information please contact Dr. Lanba.
